this is certainly the case with tourney fees (exceptions Bodog and Poker Stars); as well as basic rakeback, but the main reason bonus whoring exists and is popular is because the sites give you more in return for ring game play (especially at low-mid levels) relative to the amount of rake you give them to earn it.

calculating entry fees into tourney overlays for comparison basis would only be necessary if different sites charged different percentages relative to buyin (like $20+$5 vs $20+$2); but as it stands the industry is fairly uniform on that end. on the other hand, the amount of rake paid to a site in order to earn a certain amount of bonus varies widely based on each site's unique structure. many players don't realize that $1 in attributed rake on Party Pok...

Tourney fees are not accounted for in the overlay calculations. If you're playing a $20+2 with a $2 overlay, that's like playing rake free. If we subtracted the fee from every tournaments overlay, every regular tournament would have a negative overlay.

Also, think of it like this:

If in a ring game you are clearing a bonus that's worth $3/hr/table, we don't subtract the rake from that rate. The rake/fees are a cost of playing, and most of the bonuses/promos just reduce the rake/fees.

Yeah Gonzo.

a decent number of them do, but none match the bodog deal of being a) bottomless, and b) worth 200% rebate on your action. the next best one is Pokerstars, which is "only" 100% rebate, and reload bonuses are scarce. Pokerroom is next at 71% and semi-frequent reloads, and then it starts to trail off quickly. the only other pseudo perpetual tourney bonus site is Full Tilt at 42%, which is only a hair above rakeback on sites with better selection.

so while you might want to take entry fees out of overlays for most tournaments on other sites, it might actually make more sense NOT to when calculating on Bodog.

Example: $10,000 Guaranteed tournament with a 10+1 buy-in.

Let say 856 people enter the tournament.....

856*10= $8,560 in total prize pool from player buy-ins.

Obviously the guaranteed is not met, so the site is adding their own money to the prize pool. To figure out the overlay for this tournament divide the amount of "added money" by the number of players who entered the tournament.....

$1,440/856= $1.68

$1.68 is the overlay for this tournament.

How are the overlays calculated in the tourney's noted on the front page?
