It requires intellectual and emotional intelligence and as long as some people are born with more than others, poker will always thrive.
As far as bonuses go, I don't see them declining at any time in the future. They're one of the primary incentives for players to both play at a given site and stay there. Party's business model seems to happily incorporate the bonus structure and I don't see them trying to fix something that ain't broke.
I also see online poker growing even further with every new WPT or WSOP offering greater media penetration. This will be combined with increased internet access - I imagine future generations of phones will be perfect for bringing online poker to the masses. Streaming video and online games have hit the UK's 3G networks and DoCoMo's 3/4G stuff in Japan allows for instant purchase of tickets etc. The next generation will surely go further and I predict gambling will be one e... | | Read Entire Entry |

Look at the long-term popularity of Blackjack, and even Roulette, for instance. And look at how many players in Pacific treat the poker games as a kind of slot machine (which on the downside does mean a lot of irritating coming and going).

Very good point, although I do find Interpoker's "ending the year with a bang" promotion subtitle somewhat suggestive... Or I could just be overly paranoid. Again, I really hope you're right!

Even bad players get addicted cause they think that the laws of variance apply to them too. With the rise of poker it has created a big influx of new players and alot of them are pretty bad. I know when I first started playing I wasn't anywhere near the player I am today. They'll keep despositing cause they are hoping for that big break.

All of the above? We are, after all, participating in a less than zero sum game because of the rake.
Hmm.
perhaps the most important question in poker: how do we keep the bad players playing? Or is that something that "we" can do? Bad players are the only reason this game exists.
You can play pool for fun, or you can gamble on it. You can play backgammon for fun or money. Hell, if you're bored enough you can play blackjack for fun. You cannot play poker for fun. Without stakes, there's no game.
We NEED bad players. What can we do to keep them hanging around till they're broke?
I submit the question to the forum.

I only see sites getting bigger and more profitable. Dedicated poker cable channels, monthly IPOs, professional leagues, more books, more magazines, etc. Naturally, the monsters will buy out their smaller competitiors to consolidate resources and user base. I realize we're in the poker boom .. but as long as there is an Internet, I honestly can't see how poker will ever subside.

I am new to whoring (started a week ago) and even though I have played on Poker Stars exclusively for nearly a year, I cashed out all of my money from there yesterday to whore with it It's amazing to me that Poker Stars offers so few incentives to keep players at their site. I really like their multi table tourneys but I am tired of playing at their site when there are mucho bonuses to be had elsewhere. Besides if I leave for a few months I will probably get an invitation to come back for a 20% reload bonus...So why would I wanna stay at their site when they will probably pay me to come back if I leave It seems like a vicious cycle to me, one condusive to whoring might I add...lol.

Casino bonuses are going to gradually get tighter and tighter, until they are basically tatamount to misleading advertising. Those who read the fine print will stay far away. Those who don't will be suckers. They'll increase the WRs to nigh-impossible levels, they'll place more and more restrictions on how they can be cleared, etcetera, etcetera. Stickies, in their current form, are almost definitely going to be overhauled somehow. The casinos HAVE to be losing money on all the "advanced sticky whoring" going on.
Poker bonuses, on the other hand, will probably hold steady at pretty much where they are, at least until the craze starts to die down. Poker sites don't lose NEARLY as much money to whores as casinos do, and bonuses are good (maybe even essential) for keeping the games full. A few questions:
1) How long do you think this state of affairs (i.e. favorable and plentiful bonuses) will last? In general as well as, specifically, for the Cryptos? Are there some of you who even think that bonuses will get better as time goes by?
2) Any links to news stories about how profitable any of the big poker sites are? Personally I hope they're immensely profitable, even with generous bonuses factored in to the equation.
I read an article (it was talking about Party maybe going public) where they said it's believed that Party made 200-300 million last year.
