One difference is that my wife works part time and will be going to school part time shortly. I love life. It was an easy sell to my wife about playing poker full time. I hated my construction job and would come home tired and beat up. She saw how much I loved poker and how I played. She suggested that I quit my crappy 10/hr job and play poker. She went out and got a job. Now my day consists of changing diapers, doing homework, and playing poker(in that order).

I'M FIFTY!!!!! Just call me gramps!
Started 4 years ago playing short handed on a whim and won 2000 before I hit my 1st cold streak and cashed out with a profit.
Tried again and got addicted to winning and started to ignore babe of a wife and started to get heart burn from short handed stress and cashed out with yet another 2000.
Two years ago practiced on the full ring game and went seriously into the "sport" to see how far I could go. I'm now taking the wife to St.John USVI in Febuaray ($10,000, 1 week vacation). In fact she just got her island bikini (she's not your normal 43 year old) yesterday.
I'm playing 20 table hours a week in the summer and 40 in the winter. Would not DREAM of quitting my job but at this rate I'll retire early (5 years?) with many toys. I like my health insurance and bennies to much for to quit working.

For 1 I live in Canada and I dont have to worry about paying taxes on my poker winnings as gambling is not taxable here and what you win in a casino or in the lottery you keep. Secondly, Healthcare here for Canadians is free with whats called a "health card" that you just get renewed every 4 years for free..I dont pay to go to the doctors or the hospital.
A couple small points.
It is true that lotteries and casino wins are not taxable in Canada. However, if your major source of income (read 50.1%) comes from gambling then you are obligated by law to pay taxes on those winnings. My brother works for revenue Canada and if you would give me your real name i could gladly have this proven to you through the form of an audit.
My second point is that healthcare is not free. It is paid for by those unlike yourself who lawfully pay their taxes. A part of this tab is picked up by most emp... | | Read Entire Entry |

I put $50 into UB in October, and was actually down to nothing. I had like $5.83 and entered a $5+.50 SnG, which I won. From there, I buckled down and played the .25/.50 game until I was up to $70 or so, and then I started whoring. I've only been whoring since March, but I've made like $6000.
I only do it 10 or so hours a week and have no desire to do it more. I'd love to keep it as a hobby that makes ~$600 a month for a long time, though. A very nice supplemental income. | | Static Link |

I guess I'm one of the older posters here (which I never thought I was until now) since I'm 28, go to school full time, and play poker about 20 hours a week. I actually got into it about year and a half ago playing the Hoyle casino game. I started figuring out how the game works and decided to lose $100 and try an online NL50 game last October. Needless to say, I found out that I was actually winning money from it, so I decided to read some books and get better. Then, I found this website about 5 months after and had been a tremendous help in terms of bonus ever since. My bonus earnings jumped from $200 per month to $6-700 ever since. I consider myself more of a poker player than a whore since my poker income mostly consists of winnings rather than bonuses and I rarely play more than 3 tables since I won't play good poker if I played more.

Sure, I paid our first mortgage payment on our new house with poker money, but that was because I wanted to, not out of necessity.
Right now I have $5863 spread among my several poker accounts, and plan on buying something nice for my wife soon, and perhaps something for me. I paid for our Vegas trip in June, and made the above-mentioned mortgage payment with the money we brought back from that trip.
I am self-employed and have a wife and 2 kids. My wife does not work outside the home. I look at poker as a hobby that actually makes money for me, and allows me some mad money. What could be better than that?

I love playing cards. All kinds of cards. I have been playing them since I was a little kid. My family played poker, pinochle, spades, hearts, cribbage, gin, 31, cinch and everything else under the sun. Growing up my friends and I would play .5 games and we just had a blast. When we got older we got tired of regular old poker and started making up big pot games. 3 card stud where the low card in your hand was wild, K's are wild 5 card draw, things of that nature but there was always a house to beat. It got to the point where those same friends ended up owing me a lot of money. The thing with owing is your friends aren't really your friends when they owe you money. They become this other being that you thought that you knew your whole life but money does have a habit of seperating a friendship. Milk it for all its worth, thats what I intend to do If there is anything you can do to keep current with an accounting license or whatever (have no idea how that industry operates); just to have it as an escape hatch if its ever needed, I would do that tho. I dunno that the current popularity of the game (with fish especially) will last forever, could get a lot tougher someday. Some "safe" (relatively speaking) investments with some of the moolah you're taking in playing poker, is a good idea too, but sure you probably thought of that already.

In particular this line:
Quote: I definitely go through stages of 'obsession' with things. Poker's lasted longer than some things did; maybe it's cuz it makes me significant money. My perspective is that I can keep playing poker and reffing ice hockey while I go back to school, so why the fuck not?
Is quite interesting. My whole life I've gone through periods of obsessions with things, but many of them fizzled before too long. I don't want to be a position where I do this for awhile full time and then all of a sudden the government makes an aggressive push to ban online poker. Then you are forced to go back into the job market. Personally, I might consider using poker for income and maybe go back to school full time. I doubt whether I would commit to this full time unless I was fairly sure that online poker would continue to exist, bonuses would keep coming at a decent rate, and that there would always be a reasonable amount of fish. I admit though, it's damn tempting when you are making more online (yes minus 401k and all that jazz) than you are at your job that you feel less than fulfilled by. | | Static Link |
