You're on!!!

I'll take a little while to "compose" my response, and send it off today.

Not a bad idea. But if I take that route I will be a lot more specific, I think.

In fact, maybe all of us ought to do that, and see if at least one of them gets published...

Might I suggest that those same emails be sent as "Letters to the Editor"? They will at least gain a response, and at least one may be published.

Then the "other side" will at least have a forum for a rebuttal. I think it is ery likely that at least one of these emails will be published, if only to show how "fair" they are.

Let's face it - there's always good reading in a human interest article such as this - and quoting people like you and the two others certainly doesn't hurt from his perspective.

But as you say, he selectively quoted you. He chose to play the "seedy/bad" angle without doing the due diligence this type of article required.

He got a ery terse email from me telling him to learn how to be an objective journalist and to stick to things he knows something about. And surprisingly enough, no reply.

Like I said, not such a big surprise coming from the NY Times - one reason why I don't trust what I read in that paper (which is next to never in the first place). Washington Post and the SF Chronicle are other papers to beware, though the Post does have ONE good writer - ah ok, maybe two. And USA Today no one really takes too seriously but the articles are generally interesting to read.

Now if this article were to appear in something like the Las Vegas Review Journal, TH...

You are correct, Spear. He did have a point of iew already, and sought information to support that. Obviously, he did not bother to state that there are honest and legitimate operators.

I did not like his appearing to characterize Floridita as a shady operation. I don't think they deserve that type of bad publicity. They have always been honest and above-board with me. He never stated that Floridita was one of the good ones.

He did say that his examples "may" not be typical, but I think he implied this by not covering anyone who doesn't appear to be adversely affected by online gambling.

I felt that he slanted his coverage of me to make it appear that I have no food in the house, but that is "journalism" for you. I have no reason to "bitch" since I knew what I was doing when I talked to him. I have written articles myself where I'm sure the interviewee was less than pleased with how I quoted them. So the shoe is on the other foot this time...lol. ...

Not a matter of fear. Having worked as a business editor for an English-language daily here in Thailand, I know exactly how it goes.

The New York Times is well-known for having practiced yellow journalism in the past - and while i don't think this is necessarily yellow journalism, it does stretch things a bit.

A good journalist always tries to present both sides of an issue. I believe that common sense did NOT dictate the creation of this article - instead, there is some sort of agenda.

Give the guy a break. All the people in the story are adults. He did fudge (make that exaggerate) a few things, but basically, he probably told the truth about those particular people.

That does not mean I think he told the WHOLE truth. He did not set out to write the WHOLE truth, just the side he wanted to present (or his editor wanted to present).

Had he been interested in presenting the whole story, he would have talked to owners, and played in an online casino himself. Since this is the Times, it will get more publicity, but if the Industry can't hold its own against this sort of journalism, it won't become legit anyway.

I don't think we need to fear stories like this one, because regardless of how many of these stories they write, there will still be more and more people who gamble online. If they were truly interested in stopping gambling, they would have to stop state lotteries, horse racing, dog racing, and close all of the land casinos, for just a start. Won't happen....

Very slanted piece IMO. It's the same old "Grandma lost everything playing slots" type of story.

Not ery original. I could have written the same story in five minutes. This guy could have done much better, had he put some effort into the job--it's not like he didn't have plenty of "other" sources to draw information from.

Let me reiterate that YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

While it makes a good read, and I can ID two people in the story, I KNEW this was going to happen.

Never even made an attempt to contact me despite talking with Mike. What a two-faced pile of crap.

These are stories, while needing to be told, do a disfavor to the industry by not showing the other side.

Guess who's about to get an email blast from me?

Her's the story from the reporter (I copied it from another board). He didn't reply to me when I asked what the story was trying to do.

Bettors Find Online Gambling Hard to Resist

By MATT RICHTEL

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The plastic white magnolias just inside the front
door of Cheryl G.'s one-bedroom apartment here are impeccably
arranged. She has carefully bent each petal to make them seem more
natural.

She keeps the carpets freshly acuumed. And she fixes the flowered
bedspread so crisply each morning that hospital administrators
would applaud. Those touches reflect the control that Cheryl G.,
48, ordinarily exhibits in her life.

But the Internet unwound her - completely. In one month.

A
novice gambler, she started playing slot machines over the Internet
in February. When her spree ended - after she had lost around
$12,000 and her credit cards had no credit left - she plopped down
on the meticulously made bed for t...

This is slightly off topic, but a few weeks ago Fox news in the DC area (not sure if it was all fox stations or not) had a segment on Internet gambling. It really did not cover anything new, and seemed to be slanted towards making people afraid of being arrested for gambling online (which is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of). Anyway, I have it on tape, so if anyone would be like a copy just let me know.

The regulatory issue is getting topical with New Jersey and now the Berman Bill in Nevada - that might have activated the interest. He should talk to the OPA, too.

I don't pay a betting tax, Hitmob. Oh wait, I guess I do when I go to the land casinos...lol. Since I haven't won enough there to talk about it, I guess it doesn't feel any worse than losing all my money at the slots.

As for the interview, at least it will be a quick death!!

I talked to this guy. He seems to be interested in the point of iew of the player. If anyone wants to talk to him, email him mattr@nytimes.com

Being naturally nosy, I wasn't about to pass up a chance to find out what he was up to. He's legit, but you don't have to give him any more info about yourself than you want to, if you do want to talk to him.

Looks like the issue's about to get hot. I can confirm, however, that I did *not* get an email.

Please be advised that this *may* indicate an attempt to make the industry look bad. Responsible reporting would normally require such "attempts" to also interview people involved in the industry.

If so, please let me know how to contact you by phone. Or, if you'd prefer,
I can ask you some questions ia email, although that process can be a

I appreciate your time and insights.
