James--fascinating, isn't it? There are several great books to be written about this industry some day. Did you see the latest news out of Vegas about the FBI leak?

37 Lasseters members.
The reason for this has nothing to do with the casino reputation or fairness- I would love to play there- however Australians are BANNED and always have been from playing at Lasseters unless they were residents of the Northern Territory (our least polulated and most transient resident state.)
(Lasseters also made the comment they they would be disappointed to see there few Australians forced to go to unregulated offshore sites.)

That is amazing! Only 37 people in Australia have joined Lasseters. Maybe the locals know something about Lasseters that we don't know yet.

I see Lasseters has also just issued a statement saying the legislation won't effect them as only 37 out of their 160 000 membership is Australian! Nevertheless I'm sure Peter Bridges and his team are worried about any last minute tricks the politicians might pull - for instance making it illegal for Aussie online casinos to offer offshore gambling - that would have them heading for the hills, or rather - the islands!
The sheer hypocrisy of this legislation is what bugs me, but then I guess one should expect it from politicians unless one still believes in the tooth fairy!

Mafia sites
I believe the statement arose out of Alstons original "intelligent" response to the question of Australian palying offshore instead of being protected at Australian sites.
He inferred this would not be a problem or a matter to take into consideration as players would not be likely to play at an unregulated o/s site of a "mafia dot com" nature.
Sheesh- what a deep thinker- and this guy is in charge!

In a Melbourne daily newspaper today, the Federal Opposition Leader was quoted as saying that the proposed ban will lead Asutralians to betting on mafia-controlled foreign internet sites.
Anyone dare to disclose which sites the Mafia is behind. I'd be ery interested to see the list.

Jetset
Hypocrisy is one of the cornerstones of the Howard Government so it is no surprise.
Revenue from gambling taxes are considerable however they mainly go to state governments so the feds have minimal interest.
As a country with a reputation and addiction to sport and gambling it is ridiculous.
Protection- well dicky alston says it protects us because none of us with a gambling problem would even think about going to an online and o/s casino- its just too risky ( excuse me risk/gambling- oh never and a gambler particularly a problem one always acts sensibly) Meanwhile a US player can play at a protected casino with a favourable exchange rate while we get 100 chips for 200AUD, wait weeks to get a cheque and are ripped off by the banks at each FX transaction- I am sooooo glad this guy is on my side.
meanwhile- I can go to my local pub (slots are now there highest revenue earner) and play slots (the slots replaced live music)unregulated of course and only played... | | Read Entire Entry |

What gets to me is the fact they they're happy for anyone but Australians to have gambling problems, just not the Australian oters. My opinion is that the federal government has to be seen to be doing something about it, but is really only sticking their toe in the water rather than jumping right in. Do I feel an episode of the West Wing or Yes, Prime Minister starting?
Also ery hypocritical when we're supposed to have 25% of the world's slot machines in Australia.

The Aussie federal government attempt to ban internet gambling has become pretty online casino-specific after proposer Senator Alston exempted lotteries, sports wagering and horse race betting over the weekend.
That sort of unfair targeting really gets my blood pressure rising!
