Mary,

The possibility of collusion has been widely discussed in the rec.gambling.poker forum and maybe on 2+2 as well.

The sites have not released methods to the best of my knowledge. My sense is that Paradise Poker is well respected in this regard, particularly since players have been barred and some have complained loudly.

Well respected posters have pointed out that collusion in a well run online room should be less likely than in a B&M room.

1. Every hand ever played is recorded.

2. Computer programs can look for features that suggest collusion. Since the computer knows the composition of every hand blatant collusion such as a lock hand and garbage whipsawing a player is just too obvious.

3. Its unlikely to be encountered at low limits and at higher limits players know what to look for. Complaints can be reviewed and the entire history of a player can be examined.

Finally poker players have always had to look after themselves in B&am...

Well, speak of the Devil (or His Satanic Majesty's Favorite Games?)the OPA has had some applications from card rooms.

I need to know more about what to look for in evaluating card room security or potential problems. Any poker players want to educate us?

I don't play poker online, but I did come across a good forum for you poker players--www.twoplustwo.com

Many discussions about the different sites & software available.

Frankly, I don't see how the irtual poker room can prevent collusion between players to team up and fleece suckers. There is such a nationwide shortage of skilled staff for physical cardrooms I don't see how they can get enough cybermonitors in cubicles to catch wiseguys online.

I've had a look at AmericasCardRoom.com and over the past 3 or 4 days have never found more than 15 players online. Only holdem is active. One day a $4/8 game was going, tonight its $0.25/0.50. They have a terrific bonus offering but its going to be a struggle to develop a player base.

Poker.com seems to be selling licenses all over the place into a saturated market. Personally I wouldn't want one for free if I was in the business.

As I've said before what casinos don't seem to understand is that more poker sites is not necessarily a good thing since poker players tend to go where there is the most action. When all the sites are equidistant from the comfort of your home you will tend to go where the games are. Paradise poker is clearly market leader with likely close to 80% of all hands dealt online. They get around 2,000 to 2,300 players every evening (in North America) and have games 24/7.

I'm not promoting, they don't need it, just commenting on the market.

A little O/T but there's an amusing story on getting your money from sportsbooks over at The Prescription which among other things correctly points out the following:

"With that said, one should investigate which software company is providing the "scam" operation with its product and services ... then take it from there. Don’t believe the hype that a software company is not guilty of assisting in a conspiracy. IT IS! This is no different from the guy who drives the getaway car in a botched bank robbery when his passenger has just murdered four people in the bank."

Just a short note here. I was reading Buzz Daly's 11-28 weekly sports report and found an interesting mention of a partnership between Americas Card Room and one of the respected sports books in CR. This should be ery interesting, as it gives them a chance to offer unique tournys and promotions, as well as the ability to use credits for both poker and sports betting. It's a pretty interesting read. You can find it at BuzzDaly.com or on the news listings at MajorWager.com

In terms of the honesty of online sites, i think the structured betting that is available (for example a $1-2 table as opposed to pot limit or no limit) makes collaboration minimally profitable. i would guess that it is not worth the effort for most people. therefore i feel that online poker rooms are almost completely honest and fair. i don't consider myself a great poker player but i have won a good amount of money in online poker (over $700) because most internet players are impatient and call way too often. i have never had a problem with cashouts, and have received all profit payments without delay.

i have played at a lot of online poker sites and have found all of them to be ery good. My favorite is paradisepoker.com. there are tons of players at high and low stakes, and i feel confident that there is no cheating going on. the interface is ery fast, making the game run smoothly. i have won money there and had my winnings paid out promptly and in full. the only catch is that if you don't use firepay they charge you a fee on your deposit. other than that it is a great site.

I'm not much of a poker player either, but I tend to agree with you on the house just taking the rake. Why would it cheat unless they had dummie players in there. Somehow I don't think so though. I would think the thing to worry about is the players cheating. It would be easy for a few people to work a table. I could be wrong, but I think that's what I be looking for.

As for good sites, I think Poker.com has the best deal. A fifty dollar match. That True Poker you see on the site here at WOL blows them all away with the graghics and animations. You really gotta try that one just to experience the animations! I lost some money in there, but mostly because I suck at poker! It was worth it!

Take a look at AmericasCardRoom.com and let me know what you think. I haven't had an opportunity to open an account there yet, and the other players skills are probably a lot better than mine, but I like the feeling of going against other players rather than a dealer and think the idea of a pier to pier platform ery interesting.

As far as the honesty question goes, I suppose it's a matter of faith like anything else. I do think a poker house is less proned to cheating players though, as they have nothing to lose. When a regular casino takes action, they are putting up their own money, and while the odds are always in their favor, there is the chance that they could take a loss and go under. We've all seen that first hand. However, with a pier to pier setting, the house really doesn't have any of it's own money at stake. It simply takes a rake off of each hand for providing a playing environment, and with no funds of their own at stake, I think they are less likely to cheat.

Of course, ...
