The study's further down the page.

389 is small, to begin with - but if you look at the "methodology" (for lack of a better term) you'll see that it is severely flawed in a number of ways.

Sorry but I didn't see the original post with the statistics but...

If the survey was based on 389 people is statistically unsound. I have seen and done many surveys (in advertising industry) and that is a miniscule sampling.

Like you said G2B the Internet does attract people that have specific interests. A large number of sports card collectors that have internet access have bought or sold something online.

The odds are that a ery large percentage of people that have a gambling problem will gravitate to internet gambling. It doesn't mean that people that gamble online (that don't already have a problem) will develop a gambling problem.

Went back to read the report again.
Quote:

Internet gamblers were also more likely to be unmarried and younger than those who never used the internet for gambling. They also tended to have lower education and income levels than non-Internet gamblers, which is surprising, according to the researchers, since access to the internet is traditionally associated with people that have higher income and education levels.

This looks like a ery close match to what I surmised above. But the last bit is totally laughable, considering that nearly every university has free net access and this "traditional association" should have been blown away a long time ago by cheap and free Net access (Netzero, as an example), community services such as libraries, etc.

Seems to me someone else wanted to get their name in lights. I wonder who funded that study...

Well...

First of, Level 2 and Level 3 - and their descriptions - are ague. There is no definition - in the report, that is - of what "problematic" means.

Secondly, 31 people is a tiny sample - miniscule, whatever you choose to call it - so much so that it can only purport to represent a ery small minority of people in the area(s) surrounding the University of Connecticut looking for FREE dental care. The only thing I can make out from this is that a great number of the people in this study were either:

a. Poor or low-income, perhaps students
b. Willing to risk having their teeth pulled by dental students.
c. Penny-pinchers.

Now I don't know about you, but I'm not letting ANY student dentist work on my teeth... and I can't see a penny-pincher being a compulsive or problematic gambler.

So I'd assume (watch out, dangerous word) that the study really covers a lot of low-income or poor people - or students - and from that group I will agree that ...

I like your sense of humor!
But I disagree that the study is totally useless. Of the 389 people sureveyed, 31 people had internet gambling experience.
OF THESE 31 PEOPLE, 74% (over 23 of them)
had a level 2 or level 3 gambling problem.

This may be a small study; but its a scary one.

Dave -

Have to reply in a new thread, because it seems that percentage character you posted in the title makes it impossible to reply LOL. Sorry about that...

I saw this when it came out and laughed my ass off.

ALL of the participants were seeking dental care - that's like asking only blackjack players if they have a sweet tooth and then saying that "Study shows gamblers have sweet tooths".

This study is pretty close to useless. I thought it was going to be useful research until I read halfway through... the sample size is so small (31), so narrow (people with dental problems in Connecticut), and qualified with the all-encompassing "More research in this area is needed, say the authors, to determine whether an increase in internet use may lead to the development of more serious forms of gambling, or whether the internet attracts individuals who already have a gambling problem."
