it still fascinates me how many hearts ariations there are. So far i'd say i've seen at least 30 ariations, and the way different circles choose to use or ignore some of the ariations make nearly infinite ways to play hearts!
Actually hearts 41 has a lot of ariations that i had never seen before, but though it might be a lot of fun i dont see it as good as the "NORMAL" (as if there was...) hearts .
i think the opening lead of 2C, hearts have to be broken, shooting the moon equals 26 points are the 'normal rules'. How about the JOD (jack of diamonds equals minus 10) ariation? i used to hate it, mainly due to it was easier to cheat for players and it was a way to make the game look 'softer' . But after playin more games (and winnin more consistently ...) i do think it's a better way to play, as bad hands (which there are TONS in hearts) can aim for something else but the moon.
Btw, i've also made my own ariation: Insurance hearts. its in another thread but still ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I did play around a bit with Hearts 41.
There's one design flaw I missed until I thought/played it out. The Joker, as I have it, doesn't really work. By restricting the person holding it from playing until red suits are exhausted (or until the last trick) I'm essentially making it so that this person is screwed if he or she holds short suits in both clubs and spades. So, these rules don't work.
I think a better way to have the Joker might be this: The Joker can only be ruffed to a heart or diamond trick. When led, the Joker loses (and is played as described above) unless the A♠ or K♠ is played to the trick, in which case it wins. It also wins if played to the last trick.
Anyone who has other thoughts, let me know.

So, I posted on Hearts 41, ran my updated idea by some people I know, and actually, I think I already want to make a change:
I take back the extra penalties to the 2♣; it's still +2, but tacking on the extra penalties (can't shoot, and can't get diamond bonuses) makes it too severe. After all, if we were to make the 2♣ a major penalty card, a good part of the round would come down to hand-luck as people would just dump the smallest club possible on that first trick.
So while I support and maintain the spirit of making the first trick a penalty (to get a round started, right) I think it should be a ery minor one: just the 2 points, which is less than a full heart trick.
Also, re the Joker, I meant to say that it wins whenever played to the last trick (and never else) not only when led to it. This is why a person holding the Joker wants to clear red suits.
I'm sure there's a lot of hand-luck still in this ariant, but there's hand-luck in general in Hearts a... | | Read Entire Entry |

I think that, aside from Poker (which is really a class of games rather than a single card game) Hearts may be one of the most aried card games out there-- everyone has their own ariant. Well, here's one I came up with. I warn that this is untested; play at your own risk. However, I doubt I went too far wrong: Hearts is pretty stable as fair as ariation goes.
Hearts 41 is hearts with 41 penalty points in the deck (net of 30, counting bonus cards). The penalty alues are:
Qs: +13
Jo: +8
6h: +6
2c: +2
*h: +1 (excl. 6)
Ad: -2
Kd: -2
Qd: -2
Jd: -5
The reason I changed the diamond suit is because I feel that the Jd is too low in the pecking order to have all the bonus ested in it. You also take the 2d out of the deck, to keep a deck of 52 cards.
The 6 of hearts is just to give some excitement to the otherwise predictable 4-point nature of the heart trick. I like doing funky things to low cards in the pecking order (like my 6c in Ambition) bec... | | Read Entire Entry |
