thanks for the feedback and constructive criticism. it is true that the foot rule is out of place, and can also be seen as a 'wussy rule' but i liked the idea of calling a bad hand a 'foot' so i guess thats why i put it there. Either way, i don't think it makes a great difference but in order to make the game 'look better' i think it is appropiate to leave it out.

Your first ariation of insurance: the one in which you try to get your expected point total would creat a totally different game. The emphasis of the game its always been to get the fewest amount of points , and not to capture certain cards. It could be a nice different game, as you said more like oh hell. but in that case, i think the point cards could be changed, and put into more strategic positions (having high hearts could give you an easy advantage).

Your second ariation for insurance sounds a lot more interesting. In the sense that i still havent come up with a good system of how to make bidding. the use of papers ...

Despite my criticism, I did like your insurance idea, and here's something I came up with. It's a little more complicated, but you may want to use it.

As I said, my problem (which, I admit, is from a theoretical standpoint) with your insurance mechanic is that there's (from a technical perspective) no reason to choose the middle strategies: bets of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. You bet "6" if you have a 50% or higher chance of taking the Q♠, "0" if else. This is based on the assumption that players wish to maximize their mean expectation, or in this case want the minimum (mean) number of points.

Well, here's what I thought of. Let "insurance" against the Q♠ be sold, and have its alue fixed. If you take the Q♠ and have insurance, you only take 3 penalty points instead of 13. Thus, insurance is worth 10 points, if you take the Q♠.

Only one person gets insurance per round. The cost is in penalty points. Have players take part in a competi...

Some thoughts:

I don't like the "foot" rule, the ability to cancel a bad round. Bad rounds happen (sometimes just due to bad luck) and if a game's well-designed the luck factors will cancel each other out. The reason why Hearts is played for so many rounds (to 100, which is often 10-15 rounds) is because that's how long it takes to cancel out the hand-luck; there's a lot of it in Hearts, but any luck/skill hybrid game evens out in the end. (The reason poker's so skill-based is that one plays so many hands.)

Insurance is an interesting idea, and I'd like to see it developed. One problem I see here is that it doesn't really allow much strategic ariation. What a rational player (we avoid endgame scenarios where the difference between 99 and 100 is crucial, and just assume the desire is to minimize expected penalty) would do is insure "6" if he expected 50+% chance of taking the Queen, and insure "0" if expecting less than 50% chance; there would be no rea...

Nice game you made up there. Interesting modifications to the game of Hearts. I still can't figure out how you keep making all of these up. I'm impressed!

As my nick might imply , i love playing hearts. It is by far my favorite game though i admit other games such as spades or bridge require more strategy. So i came up with some rules of my own! Ladies and gentelmen... i present Insurance Hearts (the name sounds more appropiate in a medical pamphlet than a card forum but yeh...)

Okay, all the rules of Hearts still apply. These are only extra rules:
Insurance:
When players see their 13 cards (or 12 if playing with bidding) but before passing, they can analyze what is their chance of getting the Queen of Spades. Then they select a number from 0 to 6, and that’s the“insurance” against the Queen of Spades. This is how it works: at the end of the round, the player who got the Queen of Spades gets his amount of insurance taken away from his total points for that round. All other players add their chosen insurance to their total. Therefore a good analysis of a hand can be ery useful and experienced players will benefit greatly.
How abou...
