I would think that dealing would be a great way to study the game. Phil Ivey and many other greats earned their PhD this way. Hmmm, PhD...does that stand for Poker hand Dealer?
Let us know how that goes, ChuckT. I think it would be most interesting.

I think I might deal at the Exhibition's temporary casino this year (Toronto hosts the "Exhibition", a fair type thing every summer) which would be alot of fun.
It'd give me alot of time to try and calculate odds while doing my job and make a decent dollar over the summer. Anybody actually dealt at a minor casino or card room? What was it like?

For those of you that play in home games, it would be smart to know some of the simpler methods of doing false shuffles and cuts (or marking cards). I was an amateur magician as a teen and did children's parties in my twenties (OMG was that painful). Some of the basic card manipulation is much easier than you would think...and can be ery deceptive.
Now, I assume that it is the rare home game that has a card cheat, but since I have been in a game with such a person I know it does happen.

Thanks Nick, that really helps. I'm learning all the basics right now, like the Overhand Shuffle, Hindu and Back2Back, and the riffle shuffle is the next one i'd like to tackle.
Much like the arying rules of many cardgames, i'm finding that people tend to ary the way they shuffle as wel.

If Titan was a dealer, he would be the foremost expert...
Basically, it's just practice, practice, practice. Same goes for shuffling chips one handed. It took me hours sitting at the table fuddling with my chips to figure out how to do that. I started with two chips per side, then moved up to three, now I am on 4 per side. I still don't get it right every time, but I am getting better!!!

I can shuffle normally pretty well.. however; i've never been able to get the on-the-table shuffle down.. like dealers do in casino. Where the two stacks are right next to each other, and then with two thumbs on the sides just lift up and mix the cards and then push the stack together.
Err that wasn't a good description, but if anyone knows what i'm talking about, any tips?

I also heard that the least amount of cards that can be cut is either 4 or 5, can't remember which one. Not like many people could grab that amount of cards, but i guess it's to prevent cheating if you are colluding. Also, i think i saw it on t or somewhere that if you just tap the deck is like cutting 0 cards (a sign that you trust the dealer maybe?).

Here's some more shuffling etiquette some of you may not know...
When you have been asked to cut the deck for the dealer, you should always place your top half of the cards closer to the dealer than the original stack. And likewise the dealer should always grab the half that is farther away from him and place it on top. That way there is never any confusion.

I have dealt in tournaments and this is what was expected inbetween hands:
Wash the cards. Fan them into a pile, mix somewhat, and collect them.
2 shuffles, one ending with the right hand and one with the left.
A tri-cut. Seperate into 3 piles and restacked differently.
1 shuffle
cut onto cut card and deal.

Lol I've got people on me about shuffling too long all the time. Another thing to remember is you should always cut the cards inbetween shuffles. I watched a guy I know shuffle the deck about 4 times once but because he always ended the shuffle with his left hand the same card stayd ontop. If I wasnt the player to his left then i would have known one of someone elses cards. It was an ace too

Thanks Cardsharp, I've always wondered about this to tell the truth.
I've seen people stop at 3 or 4 (like you say casinos do) and never really thought it would randomize the cards enough. Then again people get tired of watching me shuffle 8,9,10, times....

I once read a study that said you must preform 7 rifle shuffles(the shuffle described above) to have a true random deck, althought I beleive the casino standard is 4(or so I've heard). In comparison it would take about 2500 regular hand shuffles to acheive this.

This doesn't answer how many times you need to repeat these steps to get a true random shuffle of cards...

For those of you who struggle with shuffling, I found this great tutorial to help you out:

How to Shuffle Cards
Knowing the proper way to shuffle will see you through card games and tricks galore.
Steps: 1. Separate the deck of playing cards into two roughly even stacks. 2. Hold one stack in each hand, placing your thumb underneath the stack and your next three fingers on top. 3. Position the two stacks at a slight angle and close to each other so that your thumbs are nearly touching. (Image 1) 4. Lift the insides of both stacks with your thumbs while pushing down on the outsides with your fingers. (Image 2) 5. Move your thumbs slowly out from their positions under the stacks, alternately releasing one card at a time. (Image 3) 6. Mix the two stacks in this fashion. 7. Form a single deck by pushing the shuffled cards into a uniform pile. (Image 4)
