Isn't there an old post somewhere stating the top 15 percent of SnG players get 85 percent of the cash?
This tells me that poker is CERTAINLY a game of skill over the long run.

russian roulette. depending on the size of the revolver you have a 5/6 chance of winning. although if you lose well, lets hope you don't have anything important to do the next day.

I actually think the stock market has been called gambling for the rich.

Let me see whether I can settle this argument:
Poker is a game of chance AND a game of skill.
Chance because we depend on the draw of the cards.
Skill because we can manipulate the odds in our favor.
Backgammon, horse racing and the stock market are also these type of games.
Roulette and slot machines are games of chance.
Chess and Tic-Tac-Toe are games of skill (though not at the same level ).
Back to the original question:
I don't know much about horse racing. But from the card games where you can have an edge, I think poker games give the most edge. I am not sure which poker game leads. That would be nice to know.
The edge in the stock market is much smaller than that of poker. On average, you get 10% return per year. If you are the best, like Warren Buffet, you get 22% per year. That's nothing compared to poker.
The edge in blackjack is much smaller than that in poker, especially when they use multiple decks. | | Read Entire Entry |

In my book any game of chance is a game that doesn't play to absolutes most of the time. Most hands in poker range between 50/50 to 65/35 before you see the flop. Once in awhile you can get better odds. Is this not chance? There are no 100% win hands in poker. There for you are playing odds no absolutes. Therefore it is a game of chance.
Skill does come into the equation poker. You decide when to stop. You can let hands go once you are behind and staying in while you think you are ahead. There are ery few times you truely hold the nuts that won't be changes with the next card. So you are always hedging edges and not absolutes.

Ask a simple quetion and you start a complex argument.I love this site.If you study and keep good records, watch and make notes on every event, you can. Then Horse Racing can be a profitable gamble.Plus the adreniline of being a part of the crowd with the winning ticket in your hand is hard to top.

Exactly why casinos came up with the rake, the house is ALWAYS going to make money.

To the OP: when I want to gamble, I play craps
When I want to play a game where I can gain and edge, I play Omaha-8

Sorry to think you don't think poker is a game of chance. It ABSOLUTELY is a game of chance.
Two things set it appart from other forms of casino gambling
- You push the odds in poker to your advantage in two way. 1) Table selection. The amount of profit you can make will be determined by how good you are relative to the others. If you are the worse player at the table your chances of making money is slight. If you the best player at the table your chances of making money just went up. 2) Hand selection. You can wait until you get good starting hands to play which will increase your odds of winning the hand. Unfortunately one or both of these will not guarantee you a winning night of poker. Luck still will play a part in this as to how the cards fall.
- There is no house edge. The house makes ... | | Read Entire Entry |
