maybe you should think about the read you have on your table before you decide, you may be able to make a large raise pre flop and draw them in or it may be that you feel you have to push all in pre flop, also i would maybe play it different if i was low stack than if i was large stack, but i always try to think about the read i have on the other players before deciding its no use pushing all in if you know by your read that your not going to get a call....sunshine

I've actually found that I don't mind taking a gamble with my chips VS. the overcards. Look at it this way... You are winning the hand and unless a card comes to beat you -- you win. So... if they do have 2 high cards, and the flop comes low... you are in good shape, or even if it comes high, they might miss their hand. I would rather be in the position to the lose the hand with a dominant hand, than in the position that I have to win the hand by catching a card. 10/10 I'll take that.

Basic quick guide to poket pairs:
Play AA KK and QQ agressively. Be a tad more careful with QQ if your getting reraised by a tight player.
Attack the flop hard, watch out for 3 cards to a flush or 2 of the same card on the board, specially if its high, someone may well have trips.
It may well also be worth reraising on the flop to see what the other guy does, if they keep raising chances are your hand may well be beaten. Have to use judgement here if you should keep playing or just give the hand up.
JJ and 1010 often get me into trouble, if you hit trips you will usually win (flop pending as you said sometimes people will get straights/flushes). Though if there are no overcards on the board and you raised preflop chances are you hand may well still be best.
Lower pairs only really play them from late position if there are 4 callers already, look to hit a set (3 of a kind) else you should usually fold to any action.
