Why is playing conservatively near the bubble equated to not playing to win? The two are not mutually exclusive. In order to win, you must cash. Yes, it's better to have a larger stack at that point. However, it's not always a matter of scraping in and just winning the smallest amount, which is an assumption that - as seen in this thread - is often made.
I'm neither advocating nor denigrating conservative play near the bubble, just wondering why people have to support their iews with reduction ad absurdum-style arguments.

If your plan is to barely make it into the money and get your buy-in back or pick up 25 cents in a freeroll than do the conservative thing and fold...thats fine if you want to get some $$ back.
However if your goal is to reach the final table...where all of the money in a tournament is anyways, you have to call.
There is a flaw in the question as well, late in a tournament with any significant type of real money payout will not have hands where 4 or 5 people go all-in like you might see in a freeroll. The most I have ever seen is 3, AA, AK, and QQ on the same hand.
So in reality your never really going to face more than 2 opponents all-in, so you have a win rate of > 65%, you need to maximize the alue of your hands. I would take the risk of puting my chips into the middle to double or triple up and give myself a shot at some real cash ersus folding and settling for the lowest money payout.

I agree with gfpokerfan. I would fold it if there are already too many people in the pot. some might be holding my outs. But if it's just one or two in, I'd probably go all in. And they'd catch a straight 3 to 7 and win. But that's fine! At least I get to walk out bitching about it....

The only time I can see folding rockets is in a huge multi committed pot when there are 3-5 people already all in. Your chances heads up against them individually is good by your odds drop to under 50% for winning the hand against all of them. First hand of a huge tourney I would fold it or if close to the money bubble.
I'm not cocky but I think I can outplay my opponents so why push all my chip in early on a hand that the odds are stacked against me. I know that given an hour or two I could reach the same amount and not ever be put in a situation where I could be done for the day. Let your skill decide how far you go.
Who hear if sitting at the WSOP and gets dealt them first hand and 5 people before you are all pushed all in would call. Do you really want to waste your 10k on the first hand? Not me.

I've folded pocket kings before. Depends if someone seems to be on a run. I just go with gut instinct.
Aces though? Never. Ironically, that's screwed me over more than it's won me hands. In fact in this early stage of my playing "career", I fear the pocket rockets.

Aces POSSIBLY will get beat. You've seen the prize structure of a tournament - there is a hell of a lot more money for winning than just scraping in.
Please, everyone who said they would fold pocket aces. You get these once every 220 hands, by their ery definition you will ALWAYS get pot odds to call. Please promise me you will NEVER fold the best hand pre-flop.

I dont think I could ever convince myself to fold Aces. Kings are questionable because a lot of players will play any ace and if it pairs, youre screwed. Queens and lower would be an easier laydown at that point if two or more people were already all in. The only unpaired hand I would play with 2-3 raising big would be AK.
I hope someone cares about this explanation.
PS. (As I was making this post I was just dealt Aces in my tourney. Two people went all in. What did I do? Called and just tripled up.)
Thanks Cardschat.

Never fold AA pre-flop (if you fold best hand what cards would you play?). Regardless of how many players were in pot, you will get substantial pot odds advantage. The more people that are in "all-in" the less likely you are to win, but of course you will win more if you do.
One possible exeption - if you are big stack in final 3 and other 2 have gone all in, you may want to sit out as one will be going out. I would certainly try to take them out there and then though.

Wow, that was like 7 posts...I've never seen something like that
Anyways, I would only fold AA pre-flop if I were on the bubble and it would put me all in against like 3 or more other players. You definately have the best hand of all your opponents pre-flop and there is no reason to fold it unless you chicken out like me and want garunteed money.

Should You...Could You.......Would you fold pocket Aces pre-flop? No i think will be the correct answer, it's the only answer i would ever give but when is a hand dropable?
AK against any pair is at worst a 50/50, i wouldnt fold that pre flop either but where do you draw the line? KK.....QQ....AQ suited?
