Yes granted he could have but why not bet the ace instead of letting any flush chasers get a free card?

Would defeat the purpose of having the best hand on the flop. Then the weak bet on the 8 wasn't any strength at all. Since it was weak he was still afraid of the flush. Bet a alue bet on the river, why not call? My 9's do beat the 8 and if he does have the Jack or even Ace they don't. There is still a chance that I had the best hand.

Here's how I normally would have played that. Bet pre flop 3 to 4 times the BB. Then flop I would bet the pot, however the overcards would make me stop. Now lets say I did bet on the flop and he called or the other person called. Lost chips for a lost cause early on in the game when I only lost a miniscule amount which was the goal instead of pressing with the 9's like I normally do.

The first hand I would have put out a continuation bet on the flop, would have probably taken the pot down there, most people check to the raiser and it was a ragged flop.

The hand you had 99 I think was a mistake calling down, there were 2 overcards out on the board, he could have easily slow played an ace or checked a Jack on the flop and have been betting that.

Personally speaking the flop may have been worth betting at, but I would have slowed down there and probably given it up to any betting from that point.

Otherwise the hands appear to have gone down how i woudl expect
