I play mid pp's to a 4x raise whenever I can against LAG players. I prefer to have position on them though. If I don't see alot of paint and I feel that my opponent is full of crap I will make a sizeable raise on the flop. This ery often will take it down if you have a TAG table image. I try not to overcommit to the hand though in case I get re-raised when he is on one of his goofy hands.

You had previuosly seen this player raise the same amount with A9s and he has an 4-1 chip lead over you.
Stack sizes are roughly 3k and 12k.
Based on what you had seen earlier, do you call this in hopes of set mining? and if not, what raise is worth calling in this situation as I have found this to be one of the leaks in my game.
Fixed your post. Don't open limp, even if you intend to only play the hand for set alue. Your opponent is playing good positional poker, punishing you for your limp. If he re-raises you, then you can put him on a much narrower hand range (right?), and make your decision much easier.
Btw, my general rule for set mining is the smaller stack needs 10x the amount of the call.

If you have enough chips too call his big raise, then i would call. But if not then just wait for a better hand.

Is illain aggressive after the flop? If so, this might be a profitable call if you hit your set. If illain is likely to bet/call off a good portion of chips on his CB, or will commit with an overpair or TP... then the implied odds make it a good call IMO.
If the price isn't too high and I have the chips, I will call a 4x raise for set alue (being that the implied odds are as above). If I am shortstacked, or the raiser is ery tight/passive.... I will usually muck if the raise is too high.
