Congratulations Mitch on getting through your first day of playing poker, or any card game for that matter. You've come to the right place.

Rule #1 If you don't know the rules of the game don't host, One of the primary responsibilities of the host is to arbritrate disputes. You can, of course, invite JD & put him in charge but last I heard he could only travel 150 miles from home ithout iolating parole & he eats alot & of course if you own any sheep forget it.

Jack Daniels, that is exactly what I was asking. I played last thursday night at my house, and lost a big hand because I picked up a pair of a's on the river, but one of the other guys had pocket 7's. The other 2 players said that the pocket pairs were better because he had the pair in the hole. I tried to argue and ended up giving in because I just didn't need an arguement at a poker game. Thanks.

See the way I'm reading this question, he's asking if a pocket pair of sevens beat an opponent that makes a pair on the river even if the pair made on the river is higher than the other player's pocket pair. Basically it sounds like he's asking if having the pair as your hole cards has some higher significance than pairing a hole card with a board card. If that's the question, then no.
Per the example in his question:
Player 1: 7♣7♥
Player 2: A♠J♦
Board: 2♦4♣K♥8♠A♦
Player 1 has a pair of sevens. Player 2 has a pair of Aces (that he made on the river) and wins the hand with the higher pair that he made on the river. At least that's how I'm reading the question.

If you have a pocket pair, and the board shows a higher pair you now have 2 pair, and that will win over any other hand without pocket pairs or an ace, but a higher pair made during play which would give that player 2 pair also, but higher than your 2 pair Thus that would win.
Doesn't happen all that often.

Seriously? Maybe I don't understand the question?
The higher pair wins no matter if it's a pocket pair or something one of your hole cards paired on the board (weather it be on the flop, turn, or river).
