I taught a woman the rules of texas holdem in roughly three "run-through" hands. Yet I've been trying to teach my flatmate for about 2 weeks now.

Have played a couple females at our home tournaments and they were bloody solid players.. Suppose is like pool when you go easy on them then get your ass handed to you.

It's an interesting topic. There is no doubt that there are sociological and biological differences between the genders. Men obviously have higher levels of testosterone, and that can lead to more aggressive behavior. I think that has a little to do with it. Poker, particularly NL, frequently rewards those that take risks. Males also have higher scores in mathematics on standardized tests. That doesn't mean that some females do no have great mathematical abilities. Just, in general, males have an advantage.

And if males are not considered superior poker players, why would there be separate events for women? I wish they would eliminate the separate events. Women can and will do as well as men some day. There are others strengths they have that can make up for any genetic disadvantages. BTW, the highest ever recorded IQ score was by a women named Marilyn Vos Savant.

That is so cool Bill! Is she the one with the mic who does the play-by-play? And are we going to see you on the WPT one day soon?

Linda Johnson won a gold bracelet in 1997. She won the Razz event. She is the lady you see walking around the final tables on WPT every week, and is known as the irst lady o poker.
I have played poker with Linda on numerous occassions. Linda is kind, and generous. At the poker table she is kind, generous, and a killer.
Linda is a personal friend, and in my humble opinion one of the best players in the game.

FourDogs, that rings pretty true for me. There is no way I could get through an entire book all about the ins-and-outs of playing poker. The statistics, odds, etc. would bore me to absolute tears...hell I might even end-up throwing myself off a cliff. I do enjoy watching on TV from time-to-time, however. But it is true that a man's brain is usually built for more analytical thinking, that's why you guys looooove all that odds crap and why they make a stat for everything in sports (especially football it seems)! ("Who picks their nose more in a game?" "What's the percentage of using his left hand s. his right hand while doing so, and how many times do they score after he has done so?") While women are more intuitive, because our brains are geared for multi-tasking and communication. But that doesn't mean one or the other is better: I'm w/ Dave on this one. I don't like to type-cast or generalize anyone.

My wife plays as much or more than I do but she'd never be caught dead reading a poker book. I carry outs charts and stat sheets in my back pocket to read while I'm in traffic; she listens to music. I record WPT; she records Survivor and Tommy Lee goes to college. I think men like to fiddle with the nuts and bolts while women just enjoy the interaction.

In reply, if it hasn't already been said, I've found that the worst players are male - but not sure about the best.

WSOP isn't just limited to only texas hold-em.

What about Jennifer Harmon, or Kathy Liebert (can't stand her)? I'm pretty sure they've won some bracelets (just not for NL Holdem). Plus, have you seen the Ladies Night WPT tourney? I'm pretty sure there are some success stories there as well. I was watching Ladies Night III last night, and they were saying that women only represent about 5% of the field in these big tournaments...so it is just shear numbers that have prevented a big win.

I don't really care whether someone sitting at my table is male, female or martian (as long as they're not martians with telepathic powers or something).

All I will say is that I've seen the occasional Ladies Nights they run on Live At The Bike, and the 2 Ladies Night WPTs, and the play was pretty awful in all of them.

I have no idea if women are better or worse off genetically in poker than men (I don't see why they should be), but speaking on a much more general level, if your opponents are stupid enough to make the mistake of pigeonhole you for whatever reason ("women are afraid to call raises", "Europeans are tight", "Americans are fish", "young players are overly aggressive", "Swedish chicks are hot") then you're immediately at an advantage. A person who uses a "read" on a player that isn't based on how they play will make more mistakes than they would have otherwise.

I'm a woman too. And I'm pretty sure that women are even better at poker than men.
When browsing the internet I've found an article on feemale poker players.
http://www.launchpoker.com/poker-rul...oker-blondes-/ (there are also some links to feemale players profiles - it will encourage you for sure.
Then think of what TJ Cloutier once said about Clonie Gowen - “She plays pretty damn good” .

btw, hope you're not blonde... Though if you are... I didn't mean to hurt you

Only one real problem with your comment and that is respect must be earned and not given. Applying any type of stereotype is a dangerous thing as I was serious when I said gender didn't exist at the poker table. I am facing opponents that want to take my money - nothing more or less...

Yes I think your right; girls don’t get the respect AT FIRST. We have to prove ourselves first then we gain the respect. Online I never let it known that I am female, only if it is at the end of a game and I’m doing really well, I will drop it in. Just to hurt their egos.

I was playing in a live game lately with guys that I Knew but had never played poker with before. They did not give me any respect as a poker player, reraising my raises with nothing, trying to scare me off. Didn’t work!! But by the end of the night I certainly had gained their respect and dented their ego's. So just play game, and if you deserve it, you will gain respect.

But hey, why would anyone be surprised at this, haven’t women always been striving to gain respect and equality in all aspects of life. What’s different about poker!!!

And to Rob, maybe the reason that there is not many female pro poker players, is because it was predominately a male game. Women were not altogether accepted in the poker c...

You're probably right Colin, Tiffany Williamson got highest money win, not neccisarily finish. I did read a report which said that half of female players play "socially" online, compared to just a quarter of men. It also said that 30-40% of online players were female.

Wasnt it Annie Duke in 10th a few years back?? Could be wrong

There are plenty of male players out there that dont take female players seriously and its to the womens advantage

You find a lot of players actually register as female players online, just to sucker male players ina nd take their money
