Yes Chuck, these are the times we live in.
I also have some friends who look at me as though i have been doing awful things with regards to poker/gambling.
One particular friend of mine who would bet on any horse, in any situation, for copius amounts of money, seems to think that i must be a lunitic to play games of chance/poker online.
I gave up trying to explain to him the difference between the two a long time ago.
As for ever being in front of a Judge or Jury, i think i would be saying goodbye to my loved ones prior to my appearance in Court.
Also, i am unsure that this Cardroom/Casino were doing anything illegal.
The Cavendish Club has been around for some time, and is well know in Europe.

I have to agree with what you said Mike. ( mores the pity )
The game of chance moniker will be ery hard to shift.

There are many stigma type issues attached to the game of poker and gambling/gaming in general.

The funny thing is, the amount of people all over the world that take part in these sordid disrespectful happenings amount to hundreds of millions.

Perhaps if there were a pokerchurch built as a symbol of worship for the masses, attitudes may change.

Please don't be offended anybody by my mention of churches, my wish is not to attack any faith or creed.

But one thing i do know, if such a church were erected it would have to be a big one.

well the fact is that poker is a game of chance and skill
skill is what gives the professionals and good players that extra little edge, and we all know that
I'm sure it's hard if not impossible to explain this to someone who doesn't play poker...nevermind one who's job it is to raid 'illegal' card and gambling rooms
though he should understand (it is his job so he should know everything about poker and gambling) that poker is not just based on skill
we are not always betting on the cards and letting them do the job of winning for us

I have the same problem trying to explain this to my friends and relatives who think that i "gamble" online lol
they don't play poker, and thus don't understand that i'm not just betting money and gamling

whenever faced with this question, i ask people why do you think the same people are the ones winning the huge Million dollar WSOP tournaments? Like Johnny Chan for example

He's only right in the sense that almost all nations with gaming laws agree that poker is a game of chance. We all know that skill is involved to be a sucessful poker player, but the "chance" moniker will, in all likelihood, never be removed.

Sorry it was Pokerplayer magazine not Cardplayer.

What are your thoughts on the magistrates claim that poker is not a game of skill therefore contravening gaming laws for that Province.

From the ruling he made, he is saying poker is a game of chance and nothing else.

Is he right, or is he biased about poker?

Something i read in Cardplayer magazine.
As its St. Patricks Day i thought i would share.

Poker players in Northern Ireland were left cursing their luck after police raised The Cavendish Club in central Belfast.
After halting the game, it is believed the police confiscated up to £50,000 from the £220 re-buy Texas Hold'em Tourney.
Some 200 plus punters were rounded up in a 30 strong prohibition-style raid on January 28 by local police, bit were allowed to go home, albeit empty-handed, that night.
The club successfully appealed to local magistrates to return the frozen cash a couple of days later.
Unfortunately, magistrate Desmond Perry could not be convinced that poker is a game of skill, therefore the club was iewed to be breaking the law under the 1985 Northern Ireland Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act.
Cavendish owner Sean Murphy was considering an appeal.
Murphy said: 'We will not take this decision lying down.....I hope other clubs in Northern Ireland will stand ...
