I would think you are going to be just as sensitive/good at reading a man/woman in a poker game as you are in life itself. Some people are ery good at it and some make me wonder "is anybody home?"

I can sometimes read people really well in freerolls, but thats because some of the plays they make are just stupid..
I made an outstanding play once on a read...
I could literally tell that this guy had 2 pair KQ (i named it and all) pre-flop (small bet) and the flop came something like KT8 - i had JT and raise, get re-raised and i type in the chatbox 'surely not KQ?', then a Q comes on the turn... uh oh... i check, he checks and the river comes an 8.... I bet out the pot, and after a while he mucks and shows KQ.
2 pair is easy to read sometimes, they just minimum re-raise you

I find it is ery possible to read someone online. The tells are betting patterns and I believe it is posible to induce their betting patterns by placing them in a certain situations. You can influence this by your plays made on them based on the cards on the table.

i think it can be really inpossible to really read someone. But if u play some hands 10+ and u follow what he/she does will you be able to predict the persons actions. But someone does change does tactics and make it even more difficult to be readen by anyone else. But all that is skills.

yes you can read someone. all thought you have to write notes on how they play as the tourney progresses you can read someone. if they have the same style of play the whole time agressive then u know what to act on same as slow playing player or a bluffer.
also you can read them by their body behavior. if their moving alot they prolly want you to call if their dead steal they want you to fold their prolly bluffing b ecause they dont want to show any sign at all of having a bad hand.

Reading is an art, you have to work at it, even then some guys just can't get it. Like Helmuth says "Try to guess the players hole cards and see if you were right" You would be amazed at how close you can get in live games, forget about the Donkeys online though. Some players are easy to read and others sit there like a rock giving you nothing, take advantage of the ones that you can read. Last time I played a B&M game there was one kid who would only bet with a flush draw, he would check-raise with a strong hand, I always re-raised him when he bet and made alot of my profit off him. The guy on my left was easy to read by his breathing, you could hear his heart when he had a hand which saved me alot of bets, lol. The guy on my right would start shaking his leg when he was on a draw and betting but not when he had a made hand, unfortunatly he drew out on me a few times and left the table with my money leaving his seat to an old guy that has been playing poker since before I was born and I c... | | Read Entire Entry |

I tend to play more by 'gut feeling' and if i do go wrong its usually because curiosity has gotten the better of me
Often online the size of bet could tell a lot about what kind of hand your up against - and often being able to be strong enough to bet a player when you know he is weak or unsure even though you yourself maybe have got the best hand.
Even the length of time between calls/bets etc online can be tells (allowing for connections)
It can be done believe me - my bankroll says so

I think wsop was making a crack ath the mis-spelling of the name.
A lot has changed since Doyle Brunson wrote Super System, by his own admission. When he wrote it most players knew little about the maths behind poker, and the majority of players could be run over by aggressive play. Books like Mike Caro's one on tells changed the whole 'reads' skills required, because it moved false tells from the domain of a relatively select few pros to a more common occurrence.
Reverse tells now being somewhat more common, you need to look at someones style of play over a longer period to spot the genuine tells from the deliberate, fake ones. This does tend to mean that if you're put in a difficult position early on in a game, you may just need to make your best guess, because you haven't had the chance to work out what a given 'tell' actually means for that person yet. This is one of the reasons why some fairly common advice is to play relatively tight for a little while, so you can mostly watch th... | | Read Entire Entry |

I dunno - I play alot of online poker so it's much different, but live, physical tells are definitely a thing to study, but only to an extent.
It's also ery hard to tell if someone is bluffing by their eyes, when they have mirrored sunglasses on!
I just noticed this from the first post in the thread:

In terms of physical tells, i think they work best with inexperienced players, and generally only with the big ones (sighing like they have a poor hand, looking away etc).
Like JeeDub mentioned, the more experienced players will start to use reverse psychology on you by advertising confusing tells.
Like you said, jph, Doyle says it's all in the eyes - and i agree. Just like with somone telling you a lie, the eyes tell it all - though a more experienced player will be able to look right back at you without giving anything off. That's why so many people are wearing glasses these days at the tables.
I dunno - I play alot of online poker so it's much different, but live, physical tells are definitely a thing to study, but only to an extent. Don't go overboard and assume that since he spilled his chips over, that he's got a monster.
I remember (was it lightning?) who made a post about how he accidentally spilled his chips during a hand, and everyone at the table "knew" he ... | | Read Entire Entry |

For online play...Full Tilt has that nice hand history that you can click through rapidly to try to figure out and see where, when and why someone plays certain hands. You'll never Really know unless you see their cards anyway, right?

Physical tells I fell are ery overrated. I would rather pay more attention to betting patterns that eye movement or hand twitch. As you start to play the more advanced players you now have to watch out for intential tells to lure you in. Just stick to playing style and you will do alot better than trying to watch a player all the time.

When i think of reading a person it is just my feeling at the time, it actually is a natural feeling, not much you can do really when you never played against them and its the first hand you seen them play. I think reading is a natural thing, you know the feeling you get in the bottom of your stomach that says call!

well personally i think it is possible to read....thing is ...if you know nothing about the player that just put the move on you ...YOU CAN NOT CALL!.....unless you have a monster.....reads are an accumualation of information that you have collected over the course of play...its just impossible to have a Good read on a player who just sat down

doyle brusen said to play the man eyes and not the crads, but this is really wierd, honestly iv'e been playing for way too long, and i still don't know if someone goes allin if they got it or not,i find this at cash games more than torns, cuz torn yo get use to a person style of play, and you know if he is tight, aggressive, and you can use that too judge him,but if i just met some dude at a cash game, and he puts me all in,how the hell do I tell,is it possible,or do ppl just fool themselves by thinking they can read ppl all day long.
that wa my take on it
