Potheads, I can understand your strife. But what your going through with poker is also what a lot of people go through with the mismanagement of their credit, as well. The simple fact of the matter is: if you don't have the actual money to play poker (or buy that new toy/shoes/outfit/whatever) DON'T use a credit card! It will only get you in trouble in the long run.
If you can't trust your boyfriend to not dip into the credit or bank account, DON'T LET HIM. Hide your cards, change your PIN, etc. etc. If you can't stop yourself, then it's time to cut-up the cards and get some counseling.
It comes down to living within your means. In all areas of life, not just playing poker, if you try to live beyond your means (i.e. spending money you don't have) you'll only dig a big hole for yourself that in the long run is difficult to climb out of.

potheads, is your boyfriend playing beyond his limits? What kind of games does he play and for what stakes? There's obviously a self-control issue for your boyfriend, and maybe yourself. I'm assuming he and maybe you are playing at too high stakes. I'm sure you can appreciate that poker is a game of odds, so you should see that the odds of going broke when playing well above your bankroll limits is ery high, no matter how good you are. Playing within your limits will allow you to recover from inevitable bad luck streaks. There's a bankroll guide here that could help some. http://www.cardschat.com/build-your-...r-bankroll.php
If your boyfriend refuses to change his ways with all the stress this is causing, he should probably get help, and if you feel you have any addiction or self-control issues, you could definitely go with him and help each other through it.

Only when I know I can afford it though. Since My boyfriend and I started online poker we (HE) has put us so far in debt. It causes A LOT of stress. No matter how many times I'd tell him "Do not withdraw any money from my account unless you go to the bank (night deposit or not) and deposit it FIRST! I owe two banks over $500.00 each. Fire Pay around $500.00 click2pay same. my credit cards are maxed, my boyfriend even owes his friend around $500 because he let him use the card ONCE but left it here overnight! ut the worst part of it all is that i would be literally begging and crying asking him not to overdraw my account ut he just couldnt help it. everyone missed the f***ing point. It's not like I dont know WTF I'm doing, all the people that replied witht he poker is not gambling crap like Mr. Sticker couldnt hold my jock strap in a game... but playing for too high of stakes IS gambling. And yes, I already do feel the urge to play again. And also... I thought about this today. Every time I've ever went to the real casino, I've NEVER had a problem like this... I've went, won or lost, and left. I've walked into a casino and left 5 grand richer, and I was counting my cash, the thought of going to sit at a 100/200 hold'em game NEVER even crossed my mind. And I've left a few grand poorer and was able to just chalk it up. I used to frequent the casino often back in the day when I made 3-4k a week, and never ONCE have I felt the way I do now about gambling online. I dunno why I even came to the forum today.... prolly just to see what everyone had to say, but all the replies talking about whether poker is gambling or not missed the entire point.

Sorry to see you go Dingo. But your totally correct in what you say, and i applaud you for explaining to us why.
Guys poker especially texas holdem is a game of math. Thats why we have winners and losers, you regularly take advantage of small edges, and dont call because you have a "chance of winning if the A comes". If you think otherwise then your gambling, not playing the game at your 100% ability.
How many ppl here would be able to make a quick estimation on a nut flush draw with 2 overs on a rag board with a pot sized bet into you ?
Me thinks few. Poker is NOT luck OR Gambling, its about pushing small edges so that the whole thing evens out over time and you make your 2% profit. Simple. If you dont get that, or understand the concepts involved then your gambling. Go play pool or darts or something else you have an edge at

I wish you good health Dingo. You have taken the first step in fighting your addiction and that is to admit that you have it. Of course you know the next step, and that is to get help. As a person who has fought his own addictions, I tell you it is no good to just stop as I am sure you have tried in the past. You can quit for a while but you know sooner or later you will be back at gambling in one form or another. You need to get help.
Some people beleive it is just a matter of self control but they do not realize that with addiction their is no self control. Realize that this is a disease and not a weakness in character and as any disease you need to get help to fight it. Do it now before the denial sets in.

I commend you on realizing that there is a problem with gambling, but is it really an addiction or just frustration? I can only speak for myself but I to feel lousy when I get hammered at the tables, but when I look back at HH's I realize it was my own stupidity (not sayin you stupid though) that took me out and that just kills me even more, also when I look back at those times I lacked good BR management, played above my limits and means and just played stupid poker, so maybe some time away would be good for you? and if you really need the help GO and get it, as JQ has given you the link check it out, they have a I think 20 questions thing to answer to find out if you really are addicted, but I think it's RIGGED cause everyone I know that tried it was addicted , anyway good luck in all you do and hope to be seeing you around the forum.

Jesus, here's a thread with a guy essentially opening his heart to the community and making what must be a difficult post and you guys are being so ridiculously petty and childish it's unbelievable.
It's debatable whether poker is gambling. By all means debate it sensibly, but this is not the place to do so.
By all means make a separate topic if you wish, but I trust that this will be the last we hear of the issue in this topic.

Mr. Sticker, poker is gambling. Gambling is "betting on an uncertain outcome". Do you know what certain means? Certain means 100%. When is the last time you were 100% to win a hand pre-flop? How often are you 100% to win after the flop? Almost never. Of course poker requires skill, but it is still gambling.

I think self control is a key in everything you do in life. Should drugs be illegal? Poker? Candy? You can get addicted to anything...and if the government needs to put strict regulation on everything everyone can and cannot do because of arious reasons, then that's where you and I differ. I'm sorry to hear you'll be leaving us, but even though you're feeling horrible about yourself now, the up side is that you recognize you have a problem. Just try to remember that no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Take this as a step in the right direction in learning from it.
I think you would be doing the right thing for yourself to give poker up completely (especially if the problem is as extreme as you say), but as for it being banned online, I think combuboom is 100% correct. There are so many potentially addictive things in life, it's up to the individual to (hopefully) recognize when they have the problem (which you have done), and seek help accordingly.
I think for you, the best thing you can do is contact Gamblers Anonymous. It would be a great way to get support, and be able to sound off with other people who have the same problem. Sometimes it helps to hear other's stories and experiences to help yourself on the path to recovery. I wish you all the best and hop... | | Read Entire Entry |

Dingo, I'm sorry for what you are going through, really. My first experience with online poker I had so much hope, but when I started winning I decided I had to win FASTER. I played way beyond my bankroll and lost it. I didn't lose much... my experience was surely only a tiny fraction of the stress you must be feeling, but it still made me feel like total shit, and it gave me a ery small glimpse of what gambling, or any addiction really, can do to you if you don't control yourself.
I know a lot of what you're saying is out of stress and of course from your personal experience. But like Chuck said... gambling can be fun. Some people have ery addictive personalities. Combine that with the fact that money is one of the more powerful and important things in society, and gambling can ruin lives. But it certainly doesn't have to. ok Dingo; I'm piss drunk here, and hope nothing comes out wrong because I can tell you're in a really, really stressed out situation. My serious suggestion is to seek help with gambling; poker is supposed to be fun, and obviously you sound like you're having more than a hard time with it. Some people have ery addictive personalities (i'm not giving details, but I know all about it growing up with bad situations with immediate family members in the past ), and maybe you're just not meant for poker . We love having you here, and it's disappointing seeing you leave permanently. Backing away from poker is probably a good idea considering the situation you describe that you're in, but my honest suggestion is to seek gambling addiction help if it's affecting you this much.
I hope everything turns out well; keep us updated and try to get all this shit resolved; it's not healthy to be in this kind of state of mind.
Best wishes

While I agree that Topp is a paranoid conspiracy monger, his ranting has some entertainment alue. Most of his critisism of Prima is spurious and thoughtless but I must admit, I found the idea of using on-line poker sites to launder or hide money interesting.
As for the locking of any thread, this should only be done in extreme cases where questionable members attempt to use the thread to hijack the forum to serve their own agenda. Topps prima thread came close, but the active paticipation of many of our regular members implies that there was enough interest in the subject that it should have been allowed to continue.
This isn't the first time that a thread I found mostly harmless has been blocked, locked or even deleted entirely at the whim of a mod with what seems to me like little or no deliberation.
