i dont play for "in the money" though. im trying for top 3. get your money in ahead in every all in and youll still have to hit the perfect card at the perfect time at some point.

I reckon that whenever I`ve reached a final table it`s because I have both played well and had some good cards. You need both those elements to come together for a real success.

It`s possible to grind your way into the money in a lot of tournies just through solid play on a day when the cards are not running for you, but you need luck on your side (as well as sound play) to win big.

Such out, naw, but common sense tells you that you are going to have to win a few coinflips.

I agree. You dont need to suck out specifically to win a tournament, but you must put your chips at risk to win. I would say that you have to win at least a race or so to get to many final tables like Chuck has mentioned. I also want to add that the larger the tournaments you enter this type of play is a little more required because of the speed of the tournaments and the amount of overall chips you need to accumulate. With smaller tournys only in the hundreds of players you dont necessarily need to win races to get ery deep, the more focused you are and the more skill you aqcuire will get you deeper tournaments.

"I've never been to a final table without hitting the perfect card once earlier in the tournament" - Dan Harrington
(I'm quoting from memory, but it's something like that :P)

His quote is of course talking about major ($5K+ buyin) tournaments, which are much harder to go far in, but it's almost the same with the small buyin MTTs we all play.

You don't need to suck out to win at all, but I find that every tournament I've either won or FT'ed, I've won several races to get their. If you're not healthily stacked, and are facing your share of all ins (which is usually the case), then you do need some luck to win. Skill still dominates, but luck helps a shitload.

But as for the point you need to suck out to win, no. Good playing got you to were you were. If you did the suckout moves to get there then you are probably looking at the last time you will be at a final table for a while. Luck carries you only so far. Good play will take you further.

I don`t mean pure luck wins u tournys. What I mean is that in almost every tourny I have won I can go back to one hand where I was actually behind when I pushed all in, or called an all in. I may have had a lot of outs, but I was behind. The example I gave in this thread when I pushed I was about 25% to win. An know the odd time I have gone all in with AQ for another guy to turn AK and I have caught my Q on flop.

Hello all.

I`ve just come off Ladbrokes.com after winning $681 in a $10 buyin MTT - 127 players.

I know I played well, especially as when I got to the final table I was in 9th, then when I got to the last 3 I had about 10k in chip, 2nd place had 60k and 1st place had 90k.

I always like to analize my games win, lose or draw and I would be interested in your comments on my next statement.

I think to win or to get placed high in a MTT you need to suck out/ put a bad beat on others - do you all agree?

The reason I say this is because the turning point for me in this tourny was when I got KThearts in bb, I called a 3 times bb raise. The flop was Qs, 10d, 7h. I put in a bet and got called. turn Ah. the other guy went all in and as I had him covered I called. The river 6h giving me a flush - he had 2 pair AA77x.

Now it might have been bad play by me - but the other guy had been betting like a maniac - but I sucked out!!!

This is a post the opposite...
