Hi Guys,
I am familiar with this case as I have been following the legal wranglings since day one on this one - and the gutshot may well have given itself a shot in the foot here... They have been arguing for some time that as a game of skill it should be tax deductable for UK residents, which would then mean that all the london city types would be able to play higher stakes poker and not worry about losing it too much as they could write it off as a alid "business expense" () rather than gambling losses.
It is this case that has brought about the action from the CPS - surely a case of "dont rock the boat".
Regardless of how this one turns out, in the long run it will undoubtadly be afforded a special dispensation from the government in the UK as we move into the age of UK supercasinos (a la egas style, which still remains to be seen if blackpool/brighton could support such enues!!!!) and further open licensing for the Internet operators that are based in G... | | Read Entire Entry |

Thanks for posting - I missed this in the news yesterday although I knew the court case was happening some time early this year.
I don't want to get deep into the arguments as everyone knows it's a game of skill, but I'd suggest to the prosecutor he that tries his chances heads-up s Daniel Negreanu for his own money, and see how far luck gets him.

I would say its a combination of both, skill & luck,, even though skill will win out in the long run, so the argument of its only skill wont hold up,,,, the Stock Market, Mmmmmmmmm i say its the same, a combination of both skill & luck too,, some people are just plain lucky though, i know a guy from years ago that could fall in shit and come out smelling like a Rose,

True. Over the long haul...skill wins out.
My question: Is the US stock market a "game" of skill or of chance?
And just why is horse racing and lotteries EXCLUDED from the law?
Does that pose "equal protection under the law" issues?

I heard this on the news and am intregued by the case, ill be keeping tabs on it definatly reading the article id have to agree with the prosecutor that it is mixed skill and chance. The club owners argument that it is a game of skill only i dont think will hold up

Interesting. Interesting how "element of luck" is being argued as introduced when the cards are shuffled. Could a quiz be argued as having an element of luck in the specific questions that were chosen?
Foreshadowing some US debates re the legality of online poker perhaps?
