tbh my first new years resolution is to get my life on track. I gotta either go and get back into school, or get a steady job in trades until I get my head straightened out.
After that's all done with, I'm going to get back into poker in my spare time.
I guess my goals will be:
1) Increase in quality with my games (sngs specifically) as opposed to quantity. I've found myself playing too many sngs in a day and not playing my best in them. I also won't have enough time to be playing 5 or 10+ games daily anymore if I'm going to be working.
2) Get better with my cash games; let's say come out a winning player by the end of the year.
3) I'd like to play more live. Not a definite goal, but I'd like to find some local cash games (once I improve in that area), probably like 1/2 or something small.

My goals for 2007:
Become a better player by taking good notes and taking the time to study those notes in my free time to see where the holes are in my game. (There may not be enough time in a day though.....LOL)
Read at least three poker books in 2007.
Be able to move up to the next stake level on SNG's
Make a profit in 2007
Enter a live tournament
Enter a WSOP qualifier
Have fun playing this year.

My goals:
Make 1000$ a month playing poker so i can quit part time job. (dont live in states and still a student so 1000$ will be plenty for me).
Improve and have regular good finishes in tourneys.
upgrade my play so i could go for big championships and tourneys in later years.

In descending order of likelihood;
-Be profitable
-Have a major epiphany about some aspect of the game (I've had few and I'd like another one please, I'm sure they're out there)
-Have more top 5 finishes in MTT final tables than 6-10th
-Cash out least $10,000 (didn't quite make it this year but did in 2005)
-Move up permanently to $55 SnGs from the $33s rather than dabbling
-Qualify more often for the "big" tournaments through satellites
-Actually make the money in one of the "big" tournaments
-Fluke a win in one of the biggies and retire from work

My targets for 2007:
As I find myself able to play less these days, I am re-focussing back onto MTT's - and playing weekly events (all this daily play is getting too much) and cash games are going to be out of the window, to addictive and I dont tend to stop once Ive started so they have to be kept in check, regardless of profitability.
my target would be to cash in 15% of the tournaments I play in, and I'll be more selective on the structures when choosing the tournaments I play - this should also make me less reckless when playing the lower buyins, as I know Im restricting myself to a few hours play only, not marathon 36 hour degenerate sessions like I used to do...
other than that my targets for '07 are a happy, quiet life, with the mrs. cats and new dog!!

If you manage an average of 5% a day, you'll have to be making over 6000 times as much per day after 6 months as you did at the start... good luck! (At 10% per day, 28 million times as much!)

Well, I have finalised mine, at last :-
Tourneys :-
1800 MTTs (up from 1300 in 2006)
75% ROI
ACPT = $35
Split :- Party 400 MTTs, Doyles 400 MTTs, Full Tilt 700 MTTs, Stars 300 MTTs
(A shift from almost entirely Party and Doyles in 2006)
Cash :-
25 hours per week (down from 35 hours a week in 2006)
Hourly Rate $18
Token Extravagences :-
(Write off at -100% ROI)
WCOOP $1500 (up from $1000 in 2006)
WSOP $4500 (up from 0 in 2006)
Experiments, Speed, Private/Friendly :- $2000
(Write off at -30% ROI)
Only experiment I have in mind so far is a small dataset of SNGs (maybe 100), as I have never really played any in olume.
Appendix :- Experiments from 2006
1) Effect on ROI of 4 tabling MTTs (80 MTT sample)
2) HORSE cash (30 hour sample)
3) Check out MTTs on Stars and Full Tilt to see which formats I prefer (and where all the Party regulars have defected to). (150 MTT sample on each).

Two things I really want to do in the upcoming year. One, win a large payoff MTT. I've won small payoff ones but not one of the big boys. The second is to plug the one big leak in my playing that I know I have but get sucked into repeating alot. And this is how I lose the big ones.

I'm going to operate the 5% rule, so that's $4000. Currently guilty of not quite sticking to it, as I've been playing $50 NL starting at around $300 but now just over $1000, so I'm properly financed. When I hit $2000 I'll move up to $100 NL, and so long as my win rate there is higher than at $50, I'll move up to $200 when I hit $4000.
I haven't felt under-bankrolled so far, probably because I'm comfortable at this level and most sessions have been winners so I haven't had too much in the way of downwards swings. Doing pretty nicely here so no particular rush to move up. But I suppose when you get to the point where you're playing with less than 5% of you bankroll, it becomes an insignificant amount, so you either want to start cashing out or moving up.
Another target for me: cash in a live tournament.

McKinsey & Company, a top flight strategy consulting firm, has a saying that I really like:
What gets measured gets managed
Just tracking stuff tends to improve it, because (a) you're paying attention to it and (b) you have more information with which to improve.

I really found it helped my 2005 and 2006 having these targets.
Recording all my data was a bit of a pain in the arse at first, but I think it gave me more focus.
After anyone's first big poker wins it is ery ery easy to jump around from tourney to tourney without seemingly a care in the world (i know i did)....riding mainly on post win elation (&funds).
Suddenly you have blown a couple of K just from unfocused play. Just putting the tourney results into an excel spreadsheet made me wake up a little. For example :-"What, I played 10 MTTs on that day, finishing in the bottom half in 8 of them....wtf I am doing". The yearly targets and the recording of data definately helped that out.

awesome 'new-years resolution' type thread++
1)play in a live tourney with a buy in >= $1500
2)FT in a live tourney with a buy in of >=$250
3)hold my own at a table with 2 or more pros
4)work on & become good at picking up patterns

Sounds reasonable Beriac.
It always makes be slightly cringe when I read something like 'my current bankroll is $2k and I aim to work it up to 10k to play in the WSOP ME'.......grrrrrrr. I always refrain from giving too much of an ear bashing, but it is just complete nonsense.
ME should really require a half million bankroll, or sponsorship, or qualification through feeders. To play whole bankroll on one event just completely disregards the fragile nature of the game we play. Anyone who thinks it would be better to play one 10k event rather than say one hundred $100 events needs some serious help.

Might as well put it down here as motivation. This year has been all about learning and improviing my game. I really don't play all that much right now. I am winning, but modest amounts and want to bear down a bit.
Move up to 1/2 NL
First start playing at least 1 MTT a week (vary rarely play them, I am a cash game kind of guy but gotta play those MTT's to get the odd boost to the BR)
Win a MTT
Get out to my local casino on a semi-regular basis, say 1 or 2 times a month to start
Qualify for a Candadian Poker Tour event
Win a gazillion dollars.
Edit: Just reading Joosebuck's response and he reminded of the biggest goal I have: Get better at reading players and taking notes. This would be my biggest leak as I am not always paying much attention to other players habits. Hopefully with taking a bit more serious approach to it this will come.

This is a really good thread and a great train of thought for me to be thinking about. For me, my goals for 2007 are probably going to have less to do with specific achievements and more to do with finding a rhythm.
I find I have the "ability" to play good poker but I don't always do it. 2006 was the first year that I played poker online, and it took my game to a much higher level than before when I'd just been a home-gamer. 2006 was also a decent year for my overall P&L, as though I had big losses in addition to some big wins, it looks like I will come out (slightly) ahead, having grown my bankroll to a nice level and made some withdrawals after busting out a few times.
But 2007, for me, is going to be about getting into a groove. I found I played 2006 in cycles: I would play some decent poker, start good, get better or eventually run hot, make some money, and then play too much and bust out.
So for me, here are my goals for 2007:
1) Strictly adhere to ... | | Read Entire Entry |

Heh, will be interesting to come back to these in a years time to see if I've achieved anything
Current plan:
- Stop taking stupid risks & get my bankroll's ariance to a sensible level.
- Build said bankroll up to $1500 so I can buy a new fridge.
- Build it up to $1500 again and try moving up to the $1/2 limit tables.
- Try to win SnG's without them affecting my cash game results.
Going to be an interesting year for this newbie

I would love to be at the next WSOP and raise when I'm up against Jaime Gold. When he takes a while to make a decision, I'll say "I'll show either way" in the most cocky tone I can make. If I'm not there, I wish someone else would do that.

I have been mulling over a bit on targets for the last few days, as I have nearly finished wrapping up my 2006 stats.
I am probably going to set it at 1800 MTTs, with 75% ROI. I have yet to decided fully about cash games.
I toyed with the idea of 3000 MTTs and no cash, but decided I dont think I am capable of that olume as I simply cant sustain the ROI when I get above 3 tables of MTTs at a time (esp if any of the tables are stud/razz/horse).
On a side note....How anyone plays 13,000 SNGs a year is slightly beyond me.

This is a good topic here, and I'll expand on this by bringing over something I wrote around this time last year - goals for 2006. I’ve only been playing online poker for a little over 2 years now, so some of these may see modest, but let's see how we did:
1) Continue to be a winning player, even as I move up in levels/stakes Achieved - since I am bonus-whoring less, but still making the same income, I must be doing something right.
2) Win an MTT tournament that’s not a freeroll Qualified yes - taking first in a 1-winner only 4-table satellite, I think, qualifies.
3) Be able to play more than 2 tables at a high level (can adequately play 3 or 4 tables at one time in, but not at the success level I would like). Judging by my profits this year, goal achieved!
4) Work on my NLHE cash game – just have never seemed to have “gotten it” online at anything higher than .10/.25 level, yet playing live I do alright, so go figure. Failed - not that I didn't play at all, but with... | | Read Entire Entry |
