I've only been playing for roughly 2 years now so I can't really judge what it was like before then but it's been pretty much the same since I started playing.
I think it's mostly an age thing or a new player thing. Younger folks and newer folks think they are showing people 'how smart of a poker mind' they are when they degrade someone's play. They don't realize that it actaully makes them look stupid for numerous reasons.

Hmmmm... ok.... I personally would give you a "vnh" or a "well played" depending on whether or not I caught on and folded (vnh) or if you sucked me in and I called it down with 2nd best (very well played) D
I give "gg" to all at the final table that show some skill while there...after all they played "good enuff" to get there... the exception to that is a trip over trip, boat over boat, or high over pair s. trip against a ery strong player... I give a gg if I come out on top or on the short end

People who are saying it's "mainly Americans"...
- This is probably because most poker players are American
- None of you have played on any Boss Media site, have you?
(i'm not disputing that there are a lot of obnoxious Americans out there, just trying to provide some perspective yo)

Americans are no more ruder than any of the other countries with big membership numbers with the exception of Scandinavian countries maybe.
Irish dave says he plays mostly when europeans are playing and says he has noticed an increase in the rudeness of late, thats hardly americans then is it? unless he means the tired ones. Its the percentage of americans that play on poker sites compared with other countries that makes it seem that way. I know one thing though, given the choice of walking into a shop and being served by the usual morons i have to deal with or being served by an american instead, i will choose the american EVERY time. I find the ast ast majority or americans the most polite people i have ever had the good fortune to meet, and im talking miles more polite. Just imo or course.

I can't believe I actually agree with Rob, too. The trend nowadays is that many American parents let the TV or computer be the babysitter and polite manners seem to be rarely taught. Plus there's the sheer numbers. Most players are American, so most insults would be from Americans.
Though I once played a German on Poker.com who called me a "Bush-loving Pig F***er" before our heads-up match even started. I proceeded to mute his chat and beat him soundly.

American's are congregating on a smaller number of sites (i.e the sites that you are playing on) and hence the percentage of Americans (and rude players) is increased on those sites. I think it's the same old story-people have a lot more balls with what they say when it's done over an internet connection. Most of these types would stew in their own impotent anger while losing money at a live game.

Now that its pretty defined that Americans and especially American children who are the problem, I guess there is a solution?
(However, as an American, I don't consider myself rude, nor do I ask any rude person there nationality, although I may start.)

ppl who have a bad attitude when playing online should just go somewhere, roll up in the fetal position and die quietly.
when the player/s are just being rude to one another I just shut chat off.
The only read I really depend on when playing are the betting patterns

I think it just may be that there is such a larger percentage of players who are American playing. But I have seen a lot of English do the same - and Canadian too. Canadians were particularly bad in Paradise for some reason but I haven't noticed that at any other sites.

IMO, I think there are 2 reasons for the escalation in rudeness lately:
1) More competitiveness. People are out for blood because more people are starting to think of online poker as a source of income and less for fun.
2) Sad to say but I believe more underage players are bringing the maturity level down. Judging by the spelling and grammar of most insults I see, the 12-14 year-old middle-school crowd is catching on to online poker.
I used to be guilty of #1 (see Stick's Poker Blog: ...And I'm a Name-Caller-Aholic ). But now I'm pretty much cured, though I do like to drop in some sarcasm from time to time. "Q4 is good but 72 is better." "What a great player!! You should go pro!" I know I shouldn't, but I'm weening myself.

I like to leave the chat open, its the number one way to tell when someone is on tilt, love it when they start cussing, cause then I know I dealing with a not so good player or a punk, either way when someone starts cussing I get happy, that means they are loosing it, and that will help your game in the long run.
What I hate is when someone gets busted out and they stay there as an observer talking smack and flooding the chat board.

The foul language actually doesn't bother me. I consider the source. Most of the foul talking players are hyper aggressive types who rarely manage their stack. Any information you get can be used against an opponant.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand, yea Dave it's not just online play anymore, trust me. Live play has just as much a**holes as online these days. All the younger rich kids just don't know how to keep control of themselves at the tables when they come play live and just go crazy sometimes. And too bad for me, I can't go slap them around, maybe you could come here and do that for me. On the other hand, u shouldn't, you'd get throw out of the casinos anyways. What happened to the good old civilized days when someone could just call the other person outside, and they would just settle differences there.

Had some advice about the flamers here a short while ago, was told to shut chat down, so i could play in peace. Took the advice, hesitantly, and it helped.
Then i came to think about it. The chat is one of the main sources of tells. So if i couldnt handle the chat, i'd be missing out. Funnily, having that in mind has helped, now that ive reopened the chat. Meet a few with a lift that didnt go all the way up and instead of getting annoyed, i took is as a helping hand on reading their play.

It's funny Dave, i was thinking last week that I am seeing less of this. Was actually playing a SNG a few weeks ago where the loser of a significant # of chips in an early hand flamed the winner, the winner responded with an explanation of his decision & 2 or 3 hands later the flamer apologized for his outburst. Most of the SNG's I play no one speaks at all, not even gg or nh, (maybe Rob is running a poker etiquette school). No way it's ever going to stop though.

Maybe it's just me but I've found the current crop of online players even more rude and crude than the were even a year ago. Hardy a hand goes by where someone doesn't type in "FU **shole" or some other lovely comment. I expect the relative youth of the online crowd has a bit to do with this as well. Just yesterday I called a "players" allin with QQ and he went into a cussing tirade when I beat his K-J offsuit and busted him out.
Personally, I'd love to have someone do that to me in person. I'm 6-4 and weigh 250 and I'd love to slap some respect into them. I know shutting off chat is an option; however, it means they win if we do. A little courtesy and respect makes the game so much more pleasant...
