Yes you bring up a ery good point and me and a close friend was the main ones doing everything and we got our regulars which was bout 12 guys together and we all discussed and agreeed that it would be a good way to bring extra players to the table which was one of the biggest reasons i ever got myself in the mess to begin with.

Maybe if you continue with this jackpot thing you might want to keep a record of how many times each individual puts in a dollar to the pot and pay out jackpot winnings accordingly.
After all, im not sure it would go down well with everyone if Mr."Brand new, first isit" takes it down and never returns.
Its time for a new set of rules for sure but dont over complicate them or make to many as this can sometimes be off putting.
Shuffle up and deal and good luck.

crummy excellent reply!I dont think the pot was even thought of when the deal was made, but this pot had been growing for months I really wish i had it to do over I would have worded winnings different! You guys have had some great replies here and i thank you for it.Let me do say though that this pot was astonishingly high for our game. The pot was made up of 1dollar from everyones buy in went to the pot.We played multiple times through the week but had to be 8 or more players to be able to get the pot,and i has a contact list were that anyone that had even contributed 1 dollar to the pot was called and informed of a game that wasnt sceduled on our regular friday and saturday night games
Let me do say though if i were the one who had been spotted the money for playing at a minimum I would have given my backer something for making it possible for me to win 12 times what 1st place was gonna take.
Well with all that said thx again guys i can see it is as debated here as it was at my house

60% goes to the player that makes a Straight Flush

this confuses me real bad.

we are talking about a agreement between backer and backee not a the rest of the table. What do they have to do with this?

back to the question though, how are you going to change a agreement after the fact.

so lets s...

the deal was for the tourney only not any extra so you get half the tourney money only. I dont see why this should be debated actually, look at your agreement, you bought him in and were to split 1/2 the prize money he won FROM TOURNEY , there was no where in agreement that said anything about any extra money that could possibly be won.

half the winnings is just fine, however the jackpot money should just be his. Hopefully next time he would want to play again with his own money

As host to many a home game, weekly for last 20 years, I'll say that:

a) He the player was not required too split the jackpot.

b) Your willingness to back these players is to keep your paying customers happy.

c) You should not back players, it sacrifices the integrity of play for the paying customers.

d) You should not even lend money. I've seen many friendships destroyed at a poker table over a $100.00 loan.

My story, explanation. We were palying cash games, and I would occasionally "back" a player, everybody was aware and had no problems with it. New player starts to play regularly, and comments that me losing to "backed" player screws with the odds for other players, because any loss to "backed" player will get me back half my bets, and "backed" player plays looser cuz she had nothing to lose. Everyone jumped on his bandwagon and that had to stop. Instead, I started lending money, not backing. The list got long, as I...

He should split , He is playing on your money, The fact that you had the heart to even stake the player says it all. Who in there right mind (unless your a greedy teenager) wouldnt split all the winnings knowing that they made a heeb of money playing on some1 elses dime is obviously not a poker player nor has any class period. I am a loyal meber of neverbeg.com, Which is an official staking site, And ive made some people quite a bit of money, and i would b glad 2 split any prize money accumulated in a league/jackpot pool knowing i wouldnt have made the money otherwise. Im sorry 2 hear that some1 would even bother causing a fuss over such a thing .. But thats my oppinion. GL 2 u and any future players you might "Float" the buy in to..If that so called person didnt ruin it for you.

He should give you half. You are the reason he won it. End of story.

if it was worded "winnings" then he should have given you half, if it was "ITM" he should still give you a split. sounds like a real jerk and id be glad he hasnt been back.

Well I oted no because it doesn't look like the jackpot was ever discussed. In your deal it really looks like ITM finish is what is split.

I agree that he should have split everything with you. I would have been pissed if I were you, but I don't think he's required to do so with how your stake looked to be set up.

Be sure to cover all bases next time.

I think it should have been split, but at least with the halved 2nd place money, you got back the amount that you staked him with, right? As long as you didn't lose money, at least it could have been worse.

He most definitely sounds like a taker and not a giver.
He turns up without the buy-in hoping for a stake and walks away with 1200 plus for his troubles.
It sounds to me like you were lucky he even split his prize money with you.
A ery good candidate for "FREEROLL WHORE OF THE YEAR" in my opinion.

Sorry for being harsh but thats how i see this one.

I appreciate the replies and the oting I also thought something would have been a friendly gesture especially after putting out his buy in,and indeed had it been thought of before the game i would have definately told him if he hit the 1200 and some odd dollar pot that i want a portion of that just never thought of him actually hitting it ,and not to mention i had a house full. The pot had been going for months!Just to let you all know he hasnt played at my house since. Some thinks it is bad sportsmanship on my part I think it is not wanting to feel taken advantage of again!

I wouldn't be paying this person's entry ever again, I can tell you that!! Although if previously discussed I'm sure that this could be negotiated either way. Since it wasn't, it's your tourney, and you staked him I think there is a moral obligation for him to pay you a portion of this. Maybe 25% would be a friendly gesture and would smooth the issue over???

The jackpot is winnings, and therefore should have been split.

Since he won that jackpot at your table, with your buyin, and your cards, he should split. My guess is that in a court of law the judge would see it that way, and interpret him as an employee (shill).

That said. If you liked what he added to your weekly tournament, and wanted him back, it might have been a nice gesture to let him have the jackpot. Consider it a tip.

My take on it too - i'd have given you half of everything, but your initial deal would appear to be for the prize money for the game. Shame the guy is such a jerk, but that's up to him.

Agree with dakota here - always cover any possible out come really.

Any disagreement would and could have been sorted before the game that way everyone knows where they stand and all is well when the game ends.

Money can make people go funny at times so its better to be safe than sorry

That is a tricky one. It should have been discussed when the offer was made to cover the buy-in. If you only said that if he finishes in the money then he splits that with you - then you didn't cover splitting the jackpot and technically you can't really press the issue. If you said that he splits any money won - then he should give you half.

Anyway - I am sure the lesson has been learned - cover it all up front to avoid controversy.
