Get all the olumes of Harrington On Hold"em.
Others I would suggest since you alread have both Super Systems are Small Stakes Hold"em (Sklansky and Miller); Theory of Poker (Sklansky); Sit n' Go Strategy (Collin Moshman): and just a good read not related to strategy is Positively Fifth Street (Jim McManus)

Also get a subscription to Card Player, it comes out every two weeks and there are some great articles in it, much more in depth than either Bluff or All In.

There's also lots of really good books for Stud and Omaha, although not nearly as many as there are for NLH. There's also a lot of just plain crap out there, stuff that was published just to capitalize on the popularity of Hold'em.

Harrington on Hold'em 1 and 2 are seperate books. The second book picks up right where the 1st one leaves off. The 3rd Harrington Book is a workbook from my understanding to reinforce the concepts from 1 and 2. I haven't checked out the work book but really liked 1 and 2. Those are the only books I have read so far.

I just got loads of books that are going to keep me busy for a while. With the multi-volume books (like Harrington on Holdem), Do I need to read all 4 olumes? or is the last one just the most updated ersion and I can stick with that?

Let me first be VERY clear that I am NOT advocating book learning as a substitute for playing, only that playing alone can not possibly be as advantageous as structured study combined with table experience.

Why? As Schoonmaker notes, the advantage of a logical/structured/book approach over an intuitive/experience/playing approach are:

1. It is correctable.
Since the process is isible, you can see exactly where your error(s) was, and therefore correct it. With an intuitive approach you might feel something is not right, but...

It wouldn't hurt to read some of the good poker books that are out there. It may provide insight on different styles or aspects of the game you might not encounter yourself or it may give you some extra ideas of some plays that you can use or to watch out for.

Admittedly, that can be said for the reverse that you can pick up some stuff through experience that isn't covered in a book. I just think that the more knowledge that you can take in and digest, the better. So why not get some quality info from some of the people who play for a living...and do a pretty good job of it at that!

- Theory of Poker as mentioned earlier is a great start
- I've only read the NLHE section in Super System and it's a classic...I hear it's not all that different in the 2nd ersion
- Sklansky's book on Hold'em for Advanced Players is great as mentioned for attacking the limit game
- If you like playing in B&M's, check out Caro's Book of Tells as well. The images and some references are dated,...

I am 59 years old and have been playing poker for at least 40 of those years. I am not a pro, but consistently make at least a little money playing online as well as brick and mortar games. I still think there's something to be said about the benefit of sharpening one's skills through good reading as well as by experience.

I agree with strongbower, practice and experience is the best way to learn the game, but as for books i have only read the fist super system which is ery long, but still good.

I'd be interested to hear some opinions or brief reviews of books on poker. There are many out there, and I've only read a few...one by Helmuth, "Play Poker Like the Pros" which I thought was VERY "beginnerish", and a couple by David Sklansky, "Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players" that I would rate as a ery good read if you want to really drill down on LIMIT Hold 'em. The other I've read by Sklansky, "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players" is excellent. So, that's about the extent of my poker reading to this point.

hi all, needing some help here

after talking to a fellow poker player about his different style of play to mine it seemed i had a bit to learn to become as good at the game as he is as he can make a generous sum at the game.

he told me i should read up on some books but i didnt think to ask what books he read (stupid) i didnt realise how many poker books are actually available.

can anybody recomend any books to me to give me a slight advantage on my opponents

thanks all

kieo (UK)

Maybe it's because there are 3536458938590 "poker book" threads on here already. Try the search feature. It's ery useful.

In those threads, you will find that for tournies most everyone recommends the Harrington series of books.

Well, being posted for 12 hours or having 22 iews and only one post isn't an awful rate. Some of the iewers are likely looking for books themselves, or agree that HOH is the best place to start.

Plus, there are a number of old threads covering book topics, if you use the search function. See Aliengenius' (our resident librarian) for one.

Welcome to the forum, btw.
