Low buy-in tourneys maybe but freerolls and play money games are not the places to practice making reads. If someone doesn't care about losing, they will make stupid plays that are impossible to read. People will put their stack in the middle with 83o knowing it will sometimes win. At low buy-in tourneys though you don't risk a ton of money yet people still realize it's real money and respect it and will try to win. I think that's the way to go.

I think the ability to read online will come to some people when having a certain amount of experince playing. At the moment my reads sometimes get incredible, but at times I just have to use logical thinking to try to pinpoint a range of hands that illain could have played.
The fact just is that some players and some hands are just easier to read than others. I suggest some meditation and the likes if you really want to increase your reading ability. Many might say that is a waste of time, but getting rid of those worries going around in your mind is something that will definately help you concentrate on good poker.

Yes...that can be the challenge when playing in tourneys with large numbers. It's in those scenarios that I try to use chat or just watch for their aggression/cockiness as jgizzel said.

i always go after the ones who raise constanly.......because half the time i can catch em playing marginal hands with a big pocket pair......so usually first clue is aggression/cockiness

Rather than trying to put a player on a particular hand, think what range of hands that particular player would play from that position. Then, as has been mentioned, look at his/hers betting patterns from the position there playing. If your playing cash games, well its all about the maths and piecing the bits of info together.

Pay attention to betting patterns, amount of time taken while it is their turn to act, change in avatar facial expressions.
Minus the last one.

Glad I could help out. When all is said and done though, you have to just get in there and play. Get some live table experience, there is no substitute for it.

Great stuff guys. Thanks for all the help. Diabloblanco, that is some great info. I printed it out and keep reading it over and over. I hope I can learn to do all that stuff well.

VN diablo. agree totally about the gut instinct too, has saved me a few times in live tourneys.
Mikes book is a good one and you will mainly see most of the tells from new players.

The Caro book is the bible on such matters, but the one thing it absolutely cannot do is make you understand people. Reading people in my opinion is really a gut instinct. Sure there are little things you can look for, nuances you might say, but when you peel away all the layers of the onion, you must rely on your ability to feel what the other person is putting out even though he is doing his best to keep his real emotion or intention hidden.
Before the isible, know the things you can glean difinitively. Keep a runing record of what cards people show down and how they bet those cards on every street. Memory is ital when you aren't playing online and can't take notes. You must remember these things for every player. Devise some kind of system for yourself, it helps me. I categorize hands by strength so I only have to remember 4 or 5 different classes of hands instead of tons of starting hands individually. Then all you have to do is remember monetary amounts. Playing limit this is a little ea... | | Read Entire Entry |

Tells are great, and the Book of Tells is absoutley worth commiting to memory.
They are also overrated. On rare occasion, you'll see something absurd that you can take advantage of. Look at betting patterns first, this is more reliable information. Tells sould only be about 4% of your totatl poker arsenal, and tool bag.

Hey Four Dogs ... I was going to recommend the same book. I was looking at it in the bookstroe this week - and it had a lot of info. Sit in Borders and read it - then put it back on the shelf...seems everyone does it! OK.... I did buy a couple books after looking through many.

Mike Caro's Book of Tells is the definitive work on this subject. I'm an on-line player so I can't speak with any authority on the matter. That usually doesn't stop me but I think Diabloblanco the man you want to speak to. Diablo?

It would take a good half hour or more to "read players." Pay attention to when they bet and how much they bet with a particular hand. It would probably be a good idea to play ery conservative the first hour just to observe other players. It would be a bad idea to trust your instincts once in a while.

Hey, I play a lot of On line poker but not much live poker. I just joined a poker club and I need some base for reading the other players. If anyone can give me some good strategy tips, web sites or books on reading tells and players in live games it would be great help.
