I would recommend to start with anywhere between 150-500. The site reviews here and bw101 give excellent info about various sites. As said already several times, the small bonuses at Prima are your best bet for starters. Two other little strategies to consider to build up that little bankroll: tourneys and free money for no deposits. At the Prima's you are eligible to play in their raked hand freerolls when you have 100 raked hands. It's relatively easy to get in the money with them.
Then there are a number of sites that offer a little free money for no deposit: Pacific, Royal Vegas, etc. With Pacific (godawful sw but lots of fish); register an account and within a few days you get an email saying that they have deposited some money in your account. $10-$15? Absolutely right!
In fact I started with $500 on Empire (to earn the max. First Deposit Bonus) and added another $500 as they offered a reload before I had my Neteller ready.
When I deposited the first $500, I was sure that should I find out that my play was -EV, I would stop as soon as possible, so I wouldn't lose more than say $100.
When I deposited the second $500, I was sure that my play was +EV, so there was no real risk (in fact my first $500 had grown to $800 in 3 weeks before the reload).
So if you are disciplined (i.e. play as if you had deposited only $50 or $100); then you should put $500 or more into poker if you can afford it.

And what if your friend hadn't met ev at starluck as often happens, what then? My point is that if you start with several hundred you can take some beats but still be in the game. Come on, $50? You are either 12 or somehow stumbled on to a computer with internet access (you can't possibly own one because you only have $50).
Again, I'm all for helping and I'm not trying to put anyone down but even a glance at the BW 101 guide would show that if you really want to maximize from the get-go you need to scrape up, I would say, at least $200 and preferably $500. Not saying you can't start from next to nothing but it will be so much more lucrative if you have a little more capital. You can't get a few hundred together?
Otherwise, you'll do 20% of your time earning and 80% waiting for cash-outs.
As for the help I say I'm all for giving, go to primapoker.com and look through every site. Many have small sign-up deals.
