Who died and made holdem so popular anyway?stud 8 is a consistant money maker for me and as i said in another post I like seeing the other cards.I play micro limits and in holdem people will play any 2 cards.I know everyone says to play tight and only play premium hands,but you still get cracked by idiots that will play any 2 cards.you cant put them on a hand

Still, I do sit at a studs table when I am playing crypto or if I had to clear a bonus from Prima (when they had the old definition). Another disadvantage tends to be that the swings seem to be bigger than HE, at least for me. I could definately use some more training in terms of 7 card stud and omaha, since they are in general fishier games than HE these days (provided you can find one, of course).

I'm a tightass in most games, including Stud, and you just can't keep up with an ante like that. With hi/lo it's not so bad because you win more pots and half pots, and scoops can be gi-normous.
I did a lot better at Stud when I was first starting to play it at Pokerroom, and I'm convinced it all comes down to the fact that the ante is 10 cents, which is the correct ante.

Pokerroom is strange because they don't allow the double bet on fourth if you pair up.
Check out Pokerstars for stud8.
2/4 AND 3/6 has a .25 ante. (at least they used to)

Against good players at the river I will be carefull with Aces Up & small straights. Usually just checking and calling the final bet. Against bad players I keep firing bets and raises in.
I tend not to make a bunch of straights because I only like three str8's that are live and have live two flushes. If I make a str8 it was usually an accident or I have a bunch of passive pansies that let me make my str8 for free and call my bets & raises on the end with a pair or two-pair.
Once you get trips you need to attack, raise, re-raise at 5th street and beyond. I have found waiting till 6th street against bad players to be suicide. Its not uncommon for me to check raise players twice in a stud hand, my record for che... | | Read Entire Entry |

The whole ordeal pissed me off... I spent months learning how to master 7 card stud just to play in this home game. With good friends like that you certainly don't need enemies.

There is a pool cue dealer in Indy that is a fuck artist. You call him on the phone "Do you have such and such cue and how much is it?" It's 2000 dollars. You drive an hour to see him and then it's "Oh i'm sorry I misquoted you on the cue it is actually 2200." Most players still pay it since they drove a ways to see him. He did this to me and I started walking towards the door. He kept lowering the price until it was 50 bucks over what he wanted to start. I kept walking. Finally he said "okay 2000 is what I said over the phone." I just kept on walking. Haven't talked to that guy in over 15 years since. He keeps emailing me with good cues but I won't even mess with him.
If they are a fuck artist don't go back. EVER!!!!!

This is after reading Ashley Adams' book, and Roy West's. I do every single thing they say, but for some reason it just seems like I'm CONSTANTLY either 1) failing to improve with strong starting hands 2) when I DO make something, it always gets beaten by something stronger. I have aces up? Someone else has trips. I have a flush? Someone has a hidden full house. I'm a ways away from any statistically meaningful information about how good or bad I am though, especially since I'm only now getting to the tail end of the "learning period."
Stud 8 is a different story. I fucking love this game, and I would cook my own penis if Party would just lower the goddamn ante to something reasonable. It's SO much easier to win at, so much more interesting to think about and calculate.

the reason poker games have antes, bring ins, and blinds (i'm sure you know this but i'm so shocked at that game i'll say it anyway, to prevent any of the readers here from doing the same thing) is to give the players something to compete over.

Forum: Bonus Whores | I play stud because the skillful and attentive player has a much larger advantage over the tourists than they do in almost any other game. (by tourists, i mean both non serious poker players and hold-em players that drift over to stud when they're bored. )
I also play because:
-It's more interesting
-It's less frustrating
-there seem to be less assholes in the stud games
-stud is dependant on the ante structure, which varies fron site to site, which keeps it interesting. Hold 'em is the same everywhere.
-Holdem is very much a mechanical game, stud is more dynamic, with the bettors position shifting often, etc.
-I'm a hi-lo freak in general, stud or not.
-I dominate up to 2/4 and am comfortably up to 5/10, even though i'm not rolled for that (i think for stud hilo, a 200BB roll is plenty, 400 for stud hi) I only play limit 1/2 holdem (or NL up to 1/2 blinds, but that's a whole 'nother thing)

Dabbled with HoldEm, then a friend of mine invited me to play in a live 7 card stud game. So I went to PokerStars 7 card stud micro-limit $0.04/$0.08 school. I was convinced 7 stud was a game of complete luck and could not figure out why I constantly got my butt kicked.
Read the Chip Reese 7 stud section in Super System and BAM!
Hit the PokerStars micro limits and thousands of hands later I had run $10 up to over $200 playing $0.04/$0.08.
I missed out on the illegal home game as they wanted to play no ante 1-5 spread with a $1 rake on every pot. So you could bring it in for a buck, everyone folds and you win a pot of $0 and the house rakes the $1. How fucked up is that?
I still play 7 stud whenever I find a good game. Problem is clearing bonus multi-tabling 7 stud is much more difficult than HE. You can usually only play 2 tables well at the same time. Even then the hands go slower than HE.

Why play Stud?
I'll tell you three reasons:
1) the players tend to be very bad
2) you know where you are at in a hand a little more (I do anyway)
3) extra betting round to punish the weak
