Topic: The Transition from tourneys to ring games Forum: Bonus Whores
Well now that I haven't played any tourneys for a week. I had three scheduled today. First was a private forum tourney at Poker Stars (I am telling you guys that are tourney players-go to the private tourney section of PS and sign up-players are sane...no idiots.) Was doing well, I was the chip leader. Then the beat came...hold 2-8 suited in BB no raisers so I see the flop...holy shit three spades. KQ5 of spades. Cool so I have my flush. Figuring the other guy for a king when he bets 500 I go all in. He calls. He has 55 and a 5 on board. Turn is a rag and river is a damn king. That left me with 500 chips. Next hand I get J5 diamonds and throw it in. Nothing. Gone. 17th out of 34. Sucks.

Next is the Intertops 50 raked hands 500 dollar LIMIT freeroll. Out of 164 players guess where I finish....163.

Last tourney of the night is the 2005 dollar NLHE freeroll also at Intertops.
Tourney starts at 9pm and by 9:30 i am cussing like a madman. Unreal.

From tourney player to tourne...

Ah another good intertops night. I am half way to the raked hand requirement to get into the Intertops WSOP freeroll. Played 313 hands in two hours. Made a hundred bucks. Yes I am liking the ring game world. 4 days of playing ring games only and my Intertops bankroll is flying high. Started with 100 or so and is now over 300. ME LIKEY.

I can hit Cryptos in the daytime (yea I know what I said about Crypto) and then intertops in the evening.

I am really starting to love the ring games. I am now at 689 raked hands. I started down a bit as two all ins didn't go so well. But managed to play well and get some good cards 350 hands later I am up 20 bucks on the day (after being down 65 bucks in only 50 hands earlier.)

I used to hate it when I would bust someone and they didn't disappear (like they do in tourneys). When I got busted twice today I knew the guy was an idiot and I also knew that I was going to get him eventually. Both times I got the guy. It's a feeling deep down that tells you, that this mother fucker is yours. They both smarted off when they took my chips too. So you know I had to say something back. Revenge is sweet.

I don't really play tourneys anymore but my feeling was that you could make consistent money on the SNGs. The big multi-table tourneys drove me crazy cuz you could play perfect for hours and then get wiped out just short of the money with a couple bad beats or marginal calls. But if you're a good tourney player, it can pay off. Party has their step tourney now. I think the initial buy-in is $12. If you win five rounds (three-table each, I think); you can walk away with something like 9 grand.

Harrington's new book is the best. Poker tournament strategies by Suzuki is good. Tournament Poker for the Advanced Player is good. MCEvoy's Tournament Poker is very good.

you sound like me. I never really played ring games until Nov. 04. I was always at Stars playing in MTT's. I'd play some like .50 NL there once in awhile and I was prolly on your fish lists. I'd deposit $50 or $100 every other day it seemed and I never made a cash in a tournament for more then $150. I then decided if I was going to play poker I needed to get serious and made myself read the books and everything else. The last few nights at work I was thinking bout getting in some MTT's this weekend because I feel that I got a chance in'em, and I also need to get my play polished up for April when I play to go to the WSOP. I won a super sattelite in Oct and need to take top 3 outta 50 in April to win prize package. I did play a shooting star sattelite the other weekend at Paradise and placed in that to get in the real tournament and that didn't end up to good lol. So it seems that we're movin in the opposite directions. What are some great NL MTT's books? All I have is cloutier PL & NL championship.......

I think we should clarify the type of tourneys.

Because sit and goes are NOT multis.

Whereas multis are really arduous and chancey, I think SNG's are massively profitable, maybe even moreso than ring games. And there's nothing like the feeling of continuity you get from them. You know exactly what you're investing, what the prize is, and when it's over, it's over.

I think, at the very least, you can make money in SNG's in a much more linear fashion.

I think you will like the ring games - more $$$$

you can always go back and play some tourneys for a change - I try to play 1 freeroll everday or every other day and a SnGo everyonce in awhile just to change up the pace but ring games are where to go

There is one overriding difference between tourneys and ring games that you have to be concious of- you must push finer edges in ring games. in tourneys it's often correct to fold marginal hands, resist value betting, fold draws, etc, in order to protect your stack and get up in the money. in ring games, if a move is +EV, you make it, peroid.

This is why i'm no good at tourneys, i tend to bet if i think i have even a tiny advantage. also, it bugs the hell out of me when i flop a monster hand and don't see an immediate payout for my skillful play. one suckout doesn't break you in ring games.

ring games ARE far more profitable, long run, IMO. good for you for making the switch, you'll forget all about tournament play soon. GL.

I can sit for quite a few hours and still make good decisions...that is the pool player mentality in me. Some pool gambling matches I used to play in would last 24 hours or more. I have the concentration skills necessary.

Longest I set at the computer playing poker was 9 hours of 4 tabling.

No flame here. I prefer ring games. Tourneys are just to much of a time investment for me. I like to sit down, play an hour, then get up and do something else. Playing in tourneys, I tend to do great the first 60 to 90 minutes. Then I start getting tired of sitting and it goes down hill rapidly.

I will be playing less tourneys in the future. Read an article by Phil Gordon he says tourneys are for suckers. Hmmmm. Didn't he win some tourneys? Bay 101 Shooting Stars if I remember correctly.

I have been contemplating this move for a while (and the leg injury helped my decision). I need to clear out some bonus money. Like 1K at Stars; 2K at UB and 500 at Paradise. Many more 100 and 200 dollar bonuses at new sites. Also have to play 2005 hands at Intertops to get into the WSOP freeroll. I will play in raked hand tourneys though.

It is a different world in ring games. I like it though I still like tourneys better. Get some points saved up and some good experience. Might have to make ring games my life instead of tourneys.

I finally got around to using my excel spreadsheet program to keep track of my bankrolls at the different sites and then get me a grand total for the day, week, month, year, lifetime.

I also decided to re-install Caribbean Sun (for the BW tourne...
