I believe, if you're serious about this game and winning at it, you should be always reading or re-reading a poker book. If the book gives you one little thing that leads to you winning just one nice pot, you've paid for the book. Even the "bad" books will give you at least that.
Books I believe are must reads:
The Psychology of Poker by Schoonmaker
Theory of Poker, Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players and Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky
Super System I and II by Brunson
Gambling Theory and other topics by Malmuth
Harrington on Hold'em I and II by Harrington
I would also recommend you regularly read a number of forums, blogs, etc. on the net starting with 2 + 2. | | Static Link |

For limit poker, Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller and David Sklansky. There aren't that many NL cash game books around, since NL is mostly based on reads. I also have a few of Ciaffone's books but they're not really that helpful. | | Static Link |

| Posted by: GreenWally at July 18, 2005, 3:17 pm | | Topic: Poker Books? Forum: Bonus Whores | I started playing poker last summer for the first time in home games with my friends, usually just 10$ buy in NL. I was quickly the best, and took away about 500$ for the summer (not bad for the small stakes). This summer I've made three trips to a casino in New York and played in my first ever real tournaments. My 2nd try I finished 7/85 in a NL tournament, losing with 88 to A 8. My first try in a limit tournament last week I also finished 7/88 losing with 10 10 to 7 7. I've also won money playing 5-10 everytime.
Now I'm wondering if there is a poker book anyone thinks is really helpful for someone who has a good feeling of cards already. Someone at the casino recommended "Tournament Poker and the Art of War" which I've bought and started reading, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I'm really missing out on or if books are generally pretty worthless. I have not read Super System.
CasinoWhoring is fun because of the money, but poker is fun because its actually fun. | | Static Link |
