Wow! I cant believe it but I actually agree with Hofdaddy. The song is exactly right,I cant think of anything thats ever been said or song thats truer. One thing that has'nt been mentioned for those of you (and myself) who dont have Poker Tracker is to set up a spread sheet in Excel to track your wins and loss's.It's easy to do and the last thing I do when I leave the table for the nite.I keep track by date, type of game, and stakes and of course where I played. One thing I always keep in mind is that a profit is a profit even if it's only a nickel.A lot of people dont look at like that but I do(it beats the hell out of losing).I saw a guy the other nite mention that he had played over 2 hours and was only up a buck, said he's rather lose 20 than to only be up a buck. He's on my buddy list!

It took about 7-10 days after reading Lee Jones to show proven consistent wins at .50/1 Party. That was about 3 weeks of playing real money, and 6 months of clobbering Yahoo play money (which didn't exactly help at all). Sure, I had still had mad leaks and would be subject to bankroll tilt implosion , but I had zero doubt I'll be well ahead month after month.

Some excellent advice here. I'd add that you should play. Play a ton. Play at a level you're very comfortable with. I lost the first month I played and have won every single month since then.

When I first started, I had the starting hands charts and was thinking about some of the things I had read. Unfortunately, this can cause you to miss things at the table, even overlook flushes and str8's that are sitting there. After 10,000 hands or so, the table charts aren't needed. After 25,000 to 50,000 hands, you start to see some patterns. Somewhere after 100,000 hands, many, many things will just become automatic. You'll have a more natural feel for reads, such as when someone is on a flush draw, bluffing, etc..

I believe there are technicians and natural gamblers. The great ones are technicians and natural gamblers, they understand the odds, probabilities, etc. and have great feel and instincts for the game. The technical side can be learned. The latter you're either born with o...

To become a winning player, just read a lot, both books and online and play a lot. Keep asking yourself if you made any mistake, or how you could have won more in that hand.
I don't have a very good memory myself, but I am good at learning somehow. For example, I can watch a TV show obsessively (prett much every thing I do, I do obsessively. I read on this forum I'm not the online poker player doing this); and still don't know the names of all the main characters. But if I had to learn some chemistry chapter for school, I'd read it once and the answers somehow came to me during the test. (and I f*cking hate chemistry)

Reading SSHE is a the best way to start. I had already read his books on Stud and Theory. When I started Hold-on online, only because my son was making fun of me playing an old persons game"stud", I literally was reading SSHE while playing. I had the starting hands in front of me and tried to play stright by the book. I admit I was probably lucky and started off winning right away. It took thousands of hands before I really was able to understand what I was supposed to do in certain situations. It may take longer than that to really pick up what others are doing. I make a big portion of my hourly rate by winning the hands that get checked around the flop and turn. Knowi...

To take JP's post a different way:

I thought Holdem was THE game, the only game. One day I accidentally entered an Omaha Hi/Lo tourney, assuming it was Holdem. Fortunately I'd read Sklansky's Theory of Poker once upon a time, so had some idea of where the hell I was. Busted out very early, but had a taste for this new game, and started playing it in ring games.

This mistake confirmed something for me. I don't do well at Holdem because I have no guts for Holdem.

However, playing Omaha Hi/Lo (aka O8 ) something clicks for me.

Maybe Holdem is your game, and you just need to be patient. Experience is the greatest teacher, as long as you are willing to learn from your mistakes rather than blaming bad luck or other forces. Or maybe you are better suited to another form of poker. Either way, if you truly want to get better, I expect you will. Most people who remain fish either assume poker is all luck, or blame other players' poor play for their losing sessions...

This is a very good advice and worth repeating. Trying different games will help you in every other game. A change of pace is good now and then. I always make it a point to try new games. Look to hit up CP8 soon over at UB.

Also playing some tourneys can really help your ring game, at least in my case it did. Just think of a tourney as a ring game that is constantly flowing and changing, you'll learn to adapt to different tables types.

Also, I think its finding the game that fits your style. For me, I dominate the NL shorthanded tables. Put me on a full ring limit table and I'm an average player. Some people are great at stud, some Omaha. Basic poker knowledge can be gained through reading and practice, but its gaming experience that helps you find your comfort zone. I always suggest to people that they try different games, table sizes and betting structures (PL, NL and limit). Hell, I NEVER thought I'd like Razz, but now I play it all the time.

For me, real money, day 1. Not kidding. Not counting bonuses.

I'm not bragging but I think it all depends on your approach. When I started I played NLHE/LimitHE play money ring games and tourneys for about 2 months. Sucked at ring did pretty well at NLHE tourneys.

Found O8 right before I was about to start real money games. Deposited $50 on poker stars, read all the important O8 articles on the web (Badger, etc...) and turned it into $200 playing .02/.04 and .05/.10 Limit O8 in about a month and a half. $57 was from my first O8 MTT, got 7th place.

I'm a computer geek, programmer, etc. so maybe mind works well with this game. I did...

As a baby BW and new to online poker (less than 6 months) here are some lessons I have learned about Poker and life.
1. Table selection and opponent observation are key.
2. Sometimes you just have to let the hand go no matter how pretty it is.
3. If there is only one card you are afraid of and the ROCK just reraised you, he has it.
4. The MANIAC will always have a real hand when you decide to take a stand with JJ.
5. If you keep seeing the same players show up at your table on Party and you proceed to lose your hard won gains. They have you on their buddy list. Pick up and find another game then turn on the "Hide from Search" feature.
6. Like the Outlaw Josey Wales 'Ya gotta have an edge'. Use PokerTracker, GT+, a notebook, whatever just start keeping notes.
7. Bad Beats and suckouts happen. Quit bitching and get over it. No one cares and it makes you an even bigger target later.
8. A supportive friend, wife, whatever can help you control tilt and remind you it is time...

I woke up one cold December morning in 2003 and it hit me. I've been alright ever since.

My strategy is you got to know when to hold em. Know when to fold em. You MUST learn when to walk away and know when to run. I NEVER count my money when I'm playing online. They'll be enough counting of money when I log off for the night.

If you like the game, think about it, talk about it, read about it and obsess over it. It will not take to long.

The secret in winning limit hold'm is not how much you win on good hands, it's how much you don't loose on average hands.

It's when you start to get tricky and bluff and so forth that will bring down the win rate. Remember, it's a very very slim margin from winning to losing. One small leak, one time you hold onto a hand to long per hour and you are a loser.

I think a winner is a guy that can go through a bad beat streak and still play good poker. I also think that everybody plays losing poker at times, it's the ones that play more winning poker then losing poker that come out ahead.

Now I must get my morning coffee.

I think a lot of it comes from your childhood.

If you were adept at figuring out monopoly or beat your parents at scrabble because they didnt realize how strong the multipliers were or you knew who to screw over at Risk.

Oh yeah, and basic math skills. I dont mean being a whiz, but you know the kids in the smart class who took 5 or 6 weeks to get 100 on the times table test in grade school. Those people will never win at this game.

If you cant see yourself improve when you add knowledge to some experience and self evaluation...............I guess its like chess. Anyone can study their way to being an A player, but you wont ever be a master.

Thanks. I am reading SSHE and TOP at the moment. I also read some 2+2's micro-limit hand history discussion. However lots of time the discussion stopped without a conclusion, that left me kind of confused. Seems to me that there is no correct move at all, the decision is heavily based on what type of opponents you are against and most of time you don't have enough tells to justify your move.

People learn a lot of skills for poker without ever playing a hand in their life. There's a lot of factors.

I think if you enjoy the game and really want to learn, 10k hands played with a lot of studying/reviewing mixed in (gotta get Pokertracker if you haven't already) is good enough for anyone to become a 2bb/100 winner at the micro/low limits.

I belive it varies a lot. SOme people have a natural talent. Others can read all the books about the subject and still be a losing player.

Personally, I have to admit that I have been a VERY slow learner at poker, I've read several books, read 2+2 daily, but still can't seem to make the right plays and applying the correct strategies in the specific situations.

So there's no answer to your question, except give it a try. And even if you're a break even player, it's still possible to make a very nice profit from bonii alone.

The "taking a lifetime to master" thing is not what I am looking for. My "winning" definition would be over 2BB/100 in micro limits. That definitely will take less than lifetime to achieve, right?

Well that depends on multiple factors. have you read any books? magazines or are you just going with your gut. most people have to work at becaoming better.
