Obviously implementing a serious game theory strategy is out of the question, unless you are in fact D Skla (thats what I call him...we're tight). The book is an outline of how one should think about poker. Armed with just the theory of poker and a calculator for your prefered game...you'll go pretty far. You should read other books too...but make sure to fit in some time for ToP.

Ow, that's a toughie. As I said before, SSH takes the concepts from HPFAP and relates them to loose games. TOP is, of course, the "bible" for ALL types of poker, as the concepts it discusses are written "above" the actual structure of the game. What HPFAP really does is translate TOP concepts specifically into the Limit Hold'em game structure, and give you more concrete information on how to apply it effectively. If you have actually absorbed TOP, you'll find at least 1/2 of HPFAP fairly redundant, but there is enough "nuggets" to make it a worthwhile read through. | | Static Link |

Hmm... HPFAP is designed for games where it is expected that your opponents are fairly reasonable opponents - not good players, but 2-4 players/flop is what the book is written around. It covers deception, trapping, free card plays - all the fundamentals and advanced theory required to play poker well.
SSH basically takes the core tenets of HPFAP and re-applies them to games where you are playing with a lot of really bad players, and how to handle those games in light of chasers, etc. In many respects, it simply re-iter... | | Read Entire Entry |

HPFAP is better for the higher limit games, where the players "play better", and you don't have tables filled with morons. Online, I believe HPFAP comes more into play as you move into the $3/$6 games and beyond... in the real world, more like $10/$20+.
They both have their place... you have to adapt your style to the players involved in a game, and each teaches you information that will help you. | | Static Link |

I've read this and was very dissapointed, it had a few memorable lines and quatable phrases, but the story was predictable, it was full of filler and the characters were painfully one deminsional.
Seriously though, thanks for the replies. I think ima hit up SSHE first and then hold em poker for the advanced player after that.

They're all good. The PPV has that extra "bonus" chapter. I've read it 7X and still can't get anything out of it.
I think you are overlooking 1 critical thing when choosing a version.

Then sooner or later you WILL buy this book. It's not as GREAT as a lot of people make it out to be but it's as good as there is,
Small Stakes Hold'em by Miller/Sklansky/Malmuth
then - there is the bible of Limit hold/m
Hold'em Poker for the Advanced Player Sklansky/Malmuth which is WAY better then Small stakes which I feel has a lot of fluff in it but covers some areas that Hold'm does not cover. | | Static Link |

Of the books I have I think Small Stakes Hold'em by Miller/Sklansky/Malmuth is the best. But I am sure if you look through the threads again you will find others too. I am sure that another hold'em book was rated higher than this by others.
P.S. I found best price was with Amazon, but I bought "Positively Fifth Street" by James McManus at the same time and was a free-post deal at the combined price. | | Static Link |
