I saw an interview with Mike Mattasow and he was talking about how hes a losing player online.
I'm a winnnig player online but I play much better live.
One thing live is that you can really tell the total fish a lot faster. While I might not be able to read everyone at the table, at a live game there are usually at least 2 or 3 guys who are transparent, and if you can isolate with them then you can take them apart. It's not a matter of being able to see their face/actions so much as it's a combination of that with their betting patterns. Last time I played live NL200 I flopped 2 pair. A weak player called my bet on the flop. And everything about him screamed that he had an ace that he wasn't happy about. And he just called. And called the turn. And when I value bet $25 on the river he looked like he knew he was beat as he tossed another green chip away. ... | | Read Entire Entry |

I have this online. It's kind of creepy because it's much more difficult to handwave it away than the live equivalent.
I do much better online largely because physically I'm much better suited to playing short sessions and taking frequent breaks, which isn't really possible in a cardroom. | | Static Link |

Some people have 'radar' and can get uncanny reads playing live. I'd give myself a 3 on a 1 - 10 scale here. (with the average person a 1). Someone with a high level of that skill is going to have a huge advantage in live play and not like on-line games at all.
The big pluses to on-line play are faster tables, multi-tables, lower rake, bonuses/rakeback and easy access. I think I can make more money playing 200NL on-line than 200NL live because of those factors. If I had a juicy 200NL game a ten minute walk from my bedroom any time of the day or night I might feel differently.
