Here's how it went down:

The Super Systems: out of stock
Play Poker Like the Pros: out of stock
Caro's Book of Poker Tells: out of stock
High/Low Split... by Zee: out of stock
How to Beat Low Limit 7 Card Stud: out of stock
Theory of Poker: out of stock
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players: out of stock

3 Harrington on Holdems: spending FPP to get them from Stars

So, based on the above, on comments from other forums, and the fact that Sam Farha has an Omaha book scheduled for release this October, I opted for:

Inside the Poker Mind : Essays on HoldEm and General Poker Concepts - John Feeney, Ph.D.
Psychology of Poker - Alan N. Schoonmaker, Ph.D.
Winning 7-Card Stud : Transforming Home Game Chumps into Casino Killers - Ashley Adams
Winning Low-Limit HoldEm - Lee Jones

Shipping to Canada was a whopping $30, which essentially cut a third of the value out of the GC.

Thanks again to all who took time to ...

I would go like this:

1.- Psychology of poker (I even ordered at PS just yesterday) I think its a "different lecture" which would mix my poker library just fin

2.-Winners' Guide to Omaha Poker. Slighlty less than half decent for what i've read but still worth for a total noob at O.

3.-How to Beat Low Limit 7 Card Stud. I think its pretty much basic info you can get at internet for free plus couple of concepts useful to new guys to the game

The othes are very close to each other with the exception of Winng S which i don't know/heard of. I would stay the hell away from killer poker.

Hope this helps, i found this infor while surfing for couple new books

Hmmm, either I can't write well enough to get my point across (even though it's getting away from my OP Q about "are those 6 books any good?") or I'm on too much crack (or whatever the most up-f*cking drug is out there today).

Here's an exaggerated example of the Q I tried to ask:
I have a $100 GC at Store-X. I also have a $100 GC at Store-Y. Store-X charges $100 for Book-A; Store-Y only charges $50. I'm buying Book-A at Store-Y, so what other books might be worth getting from Store-X? I'm just trying to be a good, frugal books-for-GCs-whore.

Added in to the mix, if you can believe it, is that some titles are currently out of stock at Store-X and won't be back in before my GC expires. At least I didn't pay for it.

Anyway, the summary from above is:

The Psychology of Poker: worthwhile if I run out of other titles
Winning Low Limit Holdem: as above; could have some usefull info, if nothing else but to know what some opponents are thinking. ...

If you can get the Amazon certificate, then I suggest you go ahead and do that. You want to get the books that will give you the most in return, the few dollars difference is insignificant if you can get even a fraction more out of a excellent book versus a merely decent one. There are so many really great books available from Amazon, go for it.

I hear you, and agree, so to give even more backstory, I have US$100 GC to spend at an online store. Again, I know I want to get the three HoH books, but if this store charges US$22 and Amazon.CA charges CA$22, (and I can use promo points to get an Amazon.CA GC at a better cash value, or spend my Stars FPP for US$15 (see other thread)), it's not in my best dollar value to buy HoH from this store. Long and winding, I know. I have too many ways to get the books I want, so I'm looking for other books worth getting. I should always be so lucky!

I would take the psycology one plus the Lee Jones and/or the mediocre book on stud. Even if Lee Jones' is basic its still a good book to have, i don't have it and im not planning on getting it any time soon but i've read its decent book on holdem.

Personally i would get the best books available unless you can spare those extra bucks. Why would you want to save 10$ on a book that its not worth 5$. In your spot i get the psycology one and the best other book i can get that its at an Amazon price or slightly lower.

I will however open my own book thread asking similar advice...

Let us know what you decided and if the books were any good, btw i have not forgotten about your pm, i just didn't find the links on this computer (i saw those threads on my gf's puter) and i have had crazy couple of week (end of semester and a lot of work).

Thanks Mitch. That's why I listed the books I [have read | am reading | plan to read], rather than just ask about the six I listed. I'm not interested in putting books on the shelf for the sake of having them there, but am looking for other useful opinions on Hold'em or good starters for the other games.

I really appreciated Pinos' thread about Arnold Snyder's book (one I'd never heard of), and was hoping to get "<Book> has a different, but worth considering, approach to the game" type comments here.

Moo, thanks for the clarification.

Have only read the online one, so this info isn't exact.

I found the book to be helpful, however at the time i read it i was a total n00b. I really feel this would not be a good buy if it is anything like the online one. This would be too basic for someone with your experience. Given how well read you are i say stay away from this one.

If you condensed all the references to the game to Omaha8 or Stud8 in this book instead of :"Omaha High low Split Eight or Better" or "Seven Card Stud High low Split Eight or Better" it would be at least 30 pages shorter.

Theory of Poker is the well from which all good poker books are drawn.
Read it, at least four times.

The Psychology of Poker by Dr. Alan Schoonmaker
This is an ok book. Gives a bit of insight into your opponent's mindset, but I don't find it specific enough and with enough scenarios to make it truly helpful. I read this over a year ago, so may be my understanding and memory of it is not the greatest, but I remember thinking it's worthwhile but not a lightbulbs going off type of book.

Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones
Excellent book for a newbie, but I wonder how much value you will get out of it once you have digested Small Stakes Hold'em, and Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players. If you have a friend about to learn this game, this will be a great gift.

Killer Poker by John Vorhous (the first one, and not the "Online" one)
I read this about 6 months ago, I didn't get a lot of out it, although it was an easy read.

That's right, moo. As one example, the place where I have the GC wants the same for HoH (to pick one) as Amazon, but several bucks less than Amazon for ...Psychology.... I know I'm going to get the three HoH books, but if ...Psychology... (or any of the others, which are in the same boat) is worth getting, I should get it with my GC to get the most value from the GC.

Thanks again.

Oh, I listed two Stud books. Which one did you mean?

Thank you all for the help so far. I see now I wasn't clear on my "any opinions" comment, as I meant "any opinions on the books I am about to list". I tried to keep it simple, and it backfired. Here's the whole story:

I have a fixed amount GC to spend at a particular shoppe, and am looking to get max book value for it, not max info value. I know about the HoH series, the Super Systems, all the other Sklanksy books, etc, because they are all commonly known and commonly availably just about anywhere (and at about the same price).

The six books I listed are all priced at significantly lower costs at the GC's shoppe, and I've not heard about them in any of the forums I frequent, so I am looking for opinions specific to those titles.

Thanks again for your input.

Super system 1 and 2. Learning all the different games will help immensely. Arnold Snyder's Poker Tournament Formula is a good book to read once you read Harrington. He argues for a faster style of play in tournaments.

That's definitely a must read series of books if you're at least a little bit into MTT's. I also think you should look into No Limit Hold Em - Theory and Practice as well as No limit and Pot limit Poker (by Reuben and Ciaffone I think).

I will suggest some.

If your interested in tournments, the harrington on holdem series is a total must.

Since you looking at mixed games i would consider play poker like the pros by hellmuth, or supersytem to give you a great understanding on how to beat the game. Although in poker like the pros is a basic understanding, but will easily beat any low limit games and teaches razz, omaha, o8b, stud, stud 8/b and of course holdem

hig low split by ray zee is a great advanced book for hi/lo games, but is pretty advanced and doesn't talk about basic strategy.

edit

I almost forgot, no poker players reading is complete without the theory of poker by sklansky

I found it very helpful when I was first started playing Omaha cash games, but If you are looking for good PLO ( and 8 ) advice, it will come up a little short on that. I thought the tournament tips at the back of this book were a little generic though, like they could have been copied out of any holdem strategy book.

Have you tried the library?

any other poker sites give books for prizes?
If you buy two books from cardplayer.com they put $20.00 in your UB account. Not sure if it is cashable or bonus money but if it is cashable it's a pretty good deal.

unless it changed recently it is bonus money

When you go to your library, they will most likely not have much on poker, and if they do it will probably be Mcmanus's book. But what you can do is make a list of the author/title/isbn of the books you are looking for and ask one of the librarians about their interlibrary loan program. Thats how i got my hands on quite a few of the 2+2 books.
