Also for me personally, I would rather take a coin flip when I have a medium stack trying to make a big stack, than let myself get small and have to get really lucky.

I normally only end up short near the end of a tournment when I lose a big all in pot and have the other guy covered. I don't let myself get to that stage because I am more interested in winning the tournment than cashing. I play a lot of 20-50 tournments now, and I just go win the money in ring games and so getting a small cash is pretty insignificant so I am always trying to maximise my chances of winning the whole thing.

According the to pokerdb I have a 14% chance of making final table 21% chance of cashing from the tournments I have played. The stats are skewed a little because I have won 2 and second in another razz tournments at stars which don't have big fields. But against that when I started playing tournments I was such a donkey and I had like a streak of 10 where i went out in the first few blind levels.

Harrington's books have a lot to say about this type of situation. Best advice I can offer is go read them.

However I would note that:
1) you have almost no choice anymore. The blinds will kill you and the donkeys don't lay down.
2) The longer you wait the more easily the other players can call your all-in bet. Death is almost ceratin if you wait for a premuim hand (and then your AK will lose to the villain's 73o.)
3) Two random cards vs the donkey's calling range is almost even money. So you just have to be lucky. Its more important to be first to act and in as good a possition as you can than it is to have good cards. I'd rather push with 72o from the button (folds from all prior players) than to push JTs from UTG.
4) You are going to need to get really lucky. Donkey or not, the Villain has a huge chip lead and the blind are killing the short stacks. At this point, you can't play "poker" - you just have to push and pray you get lucky. REALLY lucky.

If you are saying you always end up the short stack, you have a problem.

Short stack strategy is actually really easy. It is about pushing unraised pots in position as previously said and also playing your big hands the same way. The blinds should be so large that a few steals can make a massive difference to your chip stack.

If you just envitably end up like because you never accumulate chips then you need to work on that.

Wait until you have position to push. Push total trash on the button or cutoff, or push any decent hand in late position if there are limpers. You're going to have to get lucky when you're short-stacked.

How do you guys fight back when you are shortstack at a tourney and when donkeys have a massive chip lead (by playing preflop almost any sick hand and getting lucky couple of times in a row). I have tried various strategies, but it seems I just cant go all in with any hand like they do, (cause if i do i normally dont hit at all) so i try to play tight and push in with a better hand. Sometimes you get lucky and double up sometimes your not, but if you do come to final table im always one of the shortstacks.
