All the new ones do in order to comply with the Patriot Act gd spying req's. Nazi's! I bet the only time the G would ever dream of looking at the massive audit trail is after the fact. Just like they did with Mohammed Atta's flight training record.
Are there really bad people in Broward County? I'm shocked!!

I did have to politely remind a few patrons of the no pornography policy. But a ton of them use online dating services where the potential dates send pictures of themselves in bikinis and thongs. Not enough to qualify as porn imo, but luckily we also had two stories, so the younger kids stayed downstairs. And of course the blood and gore from all the computer games is not problem. Horrific graphic violence? Np, but a bare boob and all hell breaks loose.
One the labs at the location where I worked didn't even require library cards to sign in, and the cops did bust some folks for dealing with stolen credit cards, so there are bad people about. | | Static Link |
| Posted by: jmbfl at October 1, 2005, 8:29 am | | Topic: Windows XP Forum: Bonus Whores | You should know that it is a violation of the Broward County Public Library's usage policy to view pornography on their computers!
The computers here revert to their original settings when you close your session or when it is timed out. Anything you install is wiped then. Any logging would have to be outboard. (Or a high level inside job.)
Hell, the library is already required by law to monitor everything you do! Frankly, I don't give a crap. I am already a named victim in a large identity theft case out of NJ - an inside job at my bank (Wachovia) and the NJ Department of Labor that was funneling information to collectors and attornies. Frankly I hope they hang them all up by there toes! I did get a rather abject letter of apology from the bank though...
Point being: no system is completely secure! Take prudent risks to acheive what you need to accomplish and hope for the best. And if you are f'ed with come out swinging!!! | | Static Link |
| Posted by: RobDoral at October 1, 2005, 6:09 am | | Topic: Windows XP Forum: Bonus Whores | Well, all of the machines at the library where I worked had decent virus protection software but it would probably have been fairly easy for a hacker to install something more subtle (like that key stroke thing) that the 3 tech librarians might miss for a while (we're talking about a large library with about 50 computers total and hundreds of patrons). Some libraries install software that forces the machines to revert to all their default settings and software upon evey reboot but I honestly don't know if a hacker could sneak something in on a machine like that.
You probably are being paranoid but that doesn't mean what you're afraid of couldn't possibly happen. But in a busy library with a ton of machines and hundreds of people, some of which probably get wiped and rebuilt on a rotating basis (I mean the computers I guess ); a hacker who installed keystroke software would have to monitor huge amounts of information to find anything useful or damaging. Especially since most of what he or sh... | | Read Entire Entry |

Is this a legitimate fear, or am I just being paranoid?

OP seems to be English so he is not affected by the Patriot Act. However, so far as I know, every library system in the US is REQUIRED to track your computer use and as a result you must have some kind of registration (i.e. library card) to facilitate that. We have to here and have had to for about 3-6 months. This has no effect on ones ability to register for poker sites/install software.
I guess the name "toffeeboy" should have been the tip that he was English. Though as an American I like my toffee too. The funny thing (or not) about public libraries and the Patriot Act in the US: I was a librarian at one of the libraries in southern FL where one or more of the 9/11 bombers frequented and almost EVERY kid who plays games there figured out how to create dummy library card IDs (or just disable the tracking software) in a matter of days after the software was installed. They just did it to beat the 4 hour time limits we put on them but that's just an example of how e... | | Read Entire Entry |
| Posted by: jmbfl at September 30, 2005, 9:35 am | | Topic: Windows XP Forum: Bonus Whores | When you subscribe to a broadband ISP a static IP address is generally an extra and extra cost service. Usually only businesses bother with this, or someone who is hosting and requires a static IP address. Most broadband ISP's consider these to be commerical uses, hence the extra charge to discourage casual/uncompensated bandwidth consumption.
Furthermore, if you are not directly connected to the cable/dsl modem your router is also assigning you an IP address via DHCP. So there is a lot of indirection and IP address masking going on making this a not very reliable way for them to identify you.
I go to the library to set up new Party skins. I can install anything I want w/o problem. When my session is completed and I log off their computer it automatically restores itself to a default configuration and everything I have done disappears. (The default configuration does not even include a "start" button!

You can check this, just unplug your modem's power and network cables, then reattach. Once the firmware finishes booting and negotiating (about 2 mins); go to http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/
Do this 3 or 4 times and see if your IP changes or stays the same.

Cheers for that. I got Party and Empire no probs. Regarding public libraries I doubt they'd let you put stuff on the hard disk here in UK but I may give it a go.
Cheers chaps. | | Static Link |

It doesn't have to be that big, maybe 5 Gigs. Then install the OS onto this partition, and boot to it. Download the poker software and register, that's it!
On a related note, I have Windows XP SP2, and I had a party poker account. To create an Empire account the ONLY thing I had to do was uninstall party poker. No registry shenanegans or anything else. 157/500 raked hands played so far for the Empire signup bonus

| Posted by: toffeeboy at September 30, 2005, 5:42 am | | Topic: Windows XP Forum: Bonus Whores | I've done all the registry stuff as recommended to clear Party and Empire off my computer. This let me load up Pokernow but with Multipoker and Intertops I still get the "you have another account with us" message. I've tried creating a new user as well but that hasn't worked. I went to an Internet Cafe to sign up but they won't let you install stuff to the hard drive so I'm missing out on $200. Any more suggestions that don't involve borrowing someone else's computer as the people I know won't understand if I say I need their computer to bonuswhore poker sites.
