Are any of these worthwhile or are they just redundant?

LOL just found this

If the action has been checked to you make a top pair bet on the flop. That means a bet the size of the pot.

I suspect we're just trying to pull our 15 posts here, but if you seriously need to ask a broad question like 'when should I go all-in?', here's some advice. Invest in some sound poker books from proven winners like Doyle Brunson, David Sklansky, Phil Helmuth, Phil Gordon, Tom McEvoy, etc. The internet is also full of poker sites which offer basic strategy for beginners. Here are a few links to get you started. Save them in the "favorites" on your browser for easy reference:

I think boredom with Texas Holdem is quite natural for a large proportion of those who are good at it.

Many good Texas Holdem players are strategic thinkers who strive to improve their play. Eventually, there's not much more room to improve because you've reached the limits of your abilities. In addition to that, the game itself becomes repetitive. Many of the same situations recur and the same decisions are being made. It becomes less and less of a challenge, and more and more automatic.

When you no longer improve, when the game is repetitive, and when it is no longer challenging, guess what? You become bored.

When I first discovered Texas Holdem I thought, "This is great! It's almost as fun as playing a game of chess, but it pays me money!"

Now I sometimes feel like playing chess for an hour and foregoing the $10-$20 I can make in an hour playing poker.

I am still improving, and I've only played Texas Holdem for a few months, but I can see that e...

If you play Texas Holdem at the low blind levels I recommend 'Get the Edge at Low Limit Texax Holdem' by Bill Burton. It has a great chart inside the front cover and many helpful hints for playing online. 'Ken Warren Teaches Texas Holdem' is another good one. It will give the reader an excellent understanding of the mathematical elements of the game. Whatever you do don't waste your money on any books or ideos by Phil Helmuth. They are full of bad advice. Cheers

I would get "Internet Texas Holdem" if you are a limit player. Written by Matthew Hilger, it's a very good book from beginner to advanced.

The Sklansky's Poker is old, published in 1989. I have heard people not liking Winning Low Limit Holdem. I know nothing about Caro's book.

For NL the Sklansky book is the one to get right?

If you have SOME poker sense, you can take what is said in "Internet Texas Holdem" and apply what it says to NL games. I would pass on the Sklansky book though... published in 1989 it is just WAY outdated since back then there was no such thing as internet poker. I believe Sklansky updated the book and it's called Poker 2 or something along those lines, but the one PokerNOW is offering is the old version.

Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones will tighten you up to where you aren't losing (assuming you play Holdem). After you understand that book then maybe Internet Texas Holdem by Hilger or the ultra-popular Small Stakes Holdem by Ed Miller. Pick up Mike Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker too. It is a fun read and worth the eight bucks. Buy them all at Overstock.com dirt cheap.

Okay, I'm going to change the rules of Holdem (let's call it Boltneck Holdem). In Boltneck Holdem, there are 10 players at the table. Every player has 2 pocket cards (just like Texas Holden). Every player bets $5 preflop, or folds. There are no other betting rounds. Five cards are dealt face up, and whoever has the best hand (using the old fashioned Texas Holdem hand rankings) wins the pot.

You have AA pockets - do you bet? Sure as hell you do. You may have less chance of winning than if there were 2 players, but you sure as hell have a better chance that the bandit sittinf 72o.

My point is that you have to use all the information that you have. If that just amounts to knowing what your cards are, and the chances of anyone else having better, then that's what you base your judgement on.

Some good general books that don't require a specific focus (HoH is NL tournament specific, Small Stakes Holdem is low LIMIT):

Internet Texas Holdem by Matthew Hilger is a good start. I can't comment on WLLH because I haven't read it.

SSHE should then be read and re-read until it falls apart.

Holdem and Omaha Hi-Lo and High (all available in both limit, pot-limit and Holdem in no-limit as well). Table stakes are from $0.02/$0.04 to $50/$100. There are both single- and multi-table tournaments. Soon seven-card stud High and Hi-Lo will be added.

Good variety, but traffic very concentrated to Texas Holdem. Finally pot- and no-limit games as well as Omaha and seven-card stud (both Hi and Hi-Lo) were launched in the spring and summer 2004. (Omaha is both available in fixed-, pot- and no-limit where the no-limit version is rather unusual for Omaha, in particular in the Omaha High version).

I play NL holdem only.Well not only, just 99% of the time.Guess I'm a one trick pony at best.

You need not play all the others to sharpen your skills at NL.Might make you a better HORSE player, and maybe even a better overall poker player, but not a better NL player.

For example look at Phil Hellmuth. He is one of the best NL players there is(and he'll tell you that himself). The fact is he is not ery good at all at other poker games.

I think Doyle said it best :"No-Limit Texas holdem is the Cadillac of poker".There is the perfect amount of information for a good player to win over one who is not so good.

I in no way am against other poker,it's just not for me.All of my time invested will be in improving my NL holdem game(cash and tourney). That is what I believe will make me a better NL player.

There are people who think gambling is a sin against God and that the job of the government is to enforce the Word of God. At this point in time, people with that political philosophy have control of the government.

In truth we are lucky it isn't worse. <knocks on wood!!> In my part of Texas it isn't out of the question that my monthly dollar buy-in home game could get me arrested. It kind of ironic that Texas Holdem is possiblly illegal is Texas.

All we can do now is hope for the best on the enforcement side. Even if the goverment changes hands in the next elections, the other party isn't likely to drop the on-line poker ban. No one wants to be on record voting for activites that offend God.
