I find it odd that you answer lots of questions here and seem to know poker but don't know what a ring game is.
A ring game is a poker game where you can come and go into the game as you please. You play with your own money and leave with whatever you win. The game continues until everyone leaves. People will come into the game and leave the game so you'll play with many new players or the same ones depending on who comes and goes. It is not a tournament. So if you run out of money, you can buy back in any time. You'll see them on the poker sites as table games from penny's on up. HTH

I found that for me I was playing too much poker. Beside the chair I wore out, and the back pains from sitting all day, I had a perverted, unreal iew of the game and my ersion of the game.

I am not sure which 3 card poker game you are referring to. There is actually two ariations of it. One you play in the casino which isn't against the players but the house only. There is also a online poker ersion called three card poker which in essence is an middle eastern game which translates to teen pathi or as some refer it to teen patti. This game is available at raiseandfold poker room and I play it albeit for small limits.
This ersion is against the players on the table, and in this ersion a straight beats a flush, it's important to read the rules of the game before playing. It's more of a bluff type game unless you have a great hand.
The game is mainly played .25 NL but the games can get quite the pots. You can play blind or look at your cards, and depending on what you do depends on what you pay. If you go blind you pay 1/2 what everyone else does to call or raise.
It's not a game for everyone, but a game anyone can learn fairly quickly.

I don't know anything about Wager21's pai gow game.
I do know that I saw some oddities in their ideo poker. I ran some binomial distribution calculations based on what I saw, and determined that there's a 1 in 23,000,000,000 chance that they are dealing a fair ideo poker game. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're cheating like dogs at the pai gow as well.
NB - I don't have the notes on my ideo poker observations. But if you'd like to check for yourself, observe how often you draw a pair in their 10s or better game when you hold 1 or 2 high cards. A few dozen trials on their 5-play game should be enough to show a statistical anomaly in several million to 1 range.

I used to be addicted to A ideo Game and when you talk about in the beginning of this how u need poker for ur mind i remembered thinking about that being me on a ideo game. Once i found poker though i truly realized what a healthy addiction was and how bad for me The ideo Game(world of warcraft) was. I'm a Tennis Player looking at going Division 1 and Poker has improved my tennis game dramatically. (yea sounds crazy) The thing is one problem i had in tennis was my ego. The ego to not hit the big crowd impressing shot when i didnt need to. To me that was alot like Making a lay down in poker when u've put money in the pot and you know you are beat. In time i was able to make those laydowns and go for the simpler shot.
Poker has definetly being healthy. As long as people are in it for the right reasons.

The answer is simply.................IT'S POKER MAN. You can't do anything about bad beats or when the cards come or where they fall. Don't get so frustrated man, it's only poker. Now if this is your life & your dinner depends on it then maybe i would consider a different approach to life. It's simple, in a game that you have no control on how the cards come out then why get so upset.....yes some people play dumb sometimes but keep your emotions for something real. Don't use emotion like that on a game. Poker is only a game.

Pai Kow has been around for about 100 years and has been losing popularity among the Chinese. Pai Kow Poker is NOT a modified ersion of Chinese Poker (a.k.a. 13 Cards), but of Pai Kow, in which dominoes are used instead of cards.
A few rules are shared between Chinese Poker and Pai Kow Poker but I would say they are VERY different when it comes to strategies. The game has its roots in Hong Kong and is still ery popular. IMO it is a good game to play even between friends as there is no bluff in the game (if correctly played...they might have modified it to fit Western's taste in tigergaming though)

I think you should have an open-mind about all forms of poker. You dont have to enjoy playing them, like you said, but its good to at least know how they are played. I think if you have some knowledge and understanding of different types of poker, you will have more respect for those who play that type of game. And you might also appreciate NLH even more as well.
I dont see how having more knowledge of poker is going to affect your game negatively. Actually, having more knowledge should actually improve your game, if anything.

In California, poker is legal. Why??? The lawmakers considered Poker a game of skill. Period. It's the same reason why ESPN shows the WSOP. Poker, like all the other sports that ESPN covers, is a game of skill and talent. Sure, sometimes it appears that the game is just luck, but it not true. Poker has draws, and people mistake these draws for luck. Especially when that draw happens on the river, to give you a bad beat. So to answer, in poker skill is better than luck. If you want to gamble with cards...go play BlackJack.

Good question, and welcome to CC.
You've hit on one place where results may be the only thing that matters.
Overall, I wonder who would even consider themselves master of the game of poker. The big names and the soon to be names of the poker world might brag about having mastered the game, but most I think would shy away from saying that knowing the poker gods would shoot them down immediately.
Take Mike Matisow (please take him somewhere), he would be the one person I might guess would say he is a master of the game, and then would be slapped upside the head by Phil Helmuth.

Other than holdem, I like a good game of draw poker. Nothing fancy. Nothing wild.
To get a chuckle at a live game with the family, I have called for One Card Poker. A single card, and you see everyone elses, but, your own which is placed on your own forehead facing out. High card wins. Bluffing is a must.
Also in live poker, a game of Blood and Guts is a blast.

The more I am getting into poker the more I see comparisons to the game I love, golf. The harder you try, the worse you do. When focusing on results, the more distracted you get and not focusing on what you should.
In golf, it is the shot you are about to play, there is nothing you can do about the last one. In poker, it is the current hand, there is nothing you can do about the last one. Bad bounces, bad shots happend, its part of the game, in poker, bad beats are part of the game.

Anyhow, this issue with the cards automatically constituting a card game is now irrelevant since I think we have established that there is no dealer element in the bonus game - by picking a card you either increase the size of your win, or decrease it, but you do not leave the bonus game with nothing since you don't have a dealer to beat.

when I have a big stack what i used to do was think that the game was mine for the taking and I'd try to win every hand. Focussing on your own game then becomes far too easy and that's not how you win at poker.
The great thing about this game is you're forced to spend most of your time thinking what the other guy has.
Keep reminding yourself to do that and you'll usually do well.
Most important thing about poker is to never get cocky no matter how often you win, or how many chips you have

Poker isn't about one hand or one game....Calculating your winning/losing is about your entire career of playing Poker.
Start thinking of it as one continuing game.

A lot of people here i know use Poker Tracker and Poker Hud for stats etc - this is mainly to try to find strengths or weakness in their games.
I have tried lots of different types of tools - but to be honest i found them distracting from the game and often ended up turning them off before the end of the game .
I prefer going by the feel of the game and watching how the others are playing - and not waiting for a middle man (poker-tool) to show me my options etc.
They may help the newer player and alert them to some possibilities they may not have thought of.
By all means check them out - mine is just a personal opinon after all.

Despite its enourmous membership base, their customer service is nice, not neglectful, payouts come as promised in the time frame they advertise and many of the people at the play money tables are not just all-in every hand type of player, so you can actually learn the game the right way.
I also advise you to play both sit-n-go style and ring game tables to learn the subtle but different styles required to thrive at either tournament poker or cash game poker.

Wow, intersesting post, and i think if you really feel like that then certainly poker is not the game for you. At this stage in my poker career i can lose a full buy-in at $100 NL and not even flinch, not in the slightest. Ive been though some unreal downswings and some savage upswings as well, but now when i sit down at a table i see this session as a contuination of the last, even if i loose a few big ones because of someone elses bad play, ill still be looking for the bad players to make that bad pre-flop call, or mis-timed turn bluff with a gutshot.
Poker is a game that is fluid, its always changing, the dynamics of the game are constantly evolving, every session will be different, there is no 100% correct way to play, and as such learning and mastering the game takes a lifetime. Enjoy your journey, and just put a little consideration in dropping holdem, there is always some juicy o8 tables out there you know

With respect to the posters who make excellent points in favour of poker as a sport, I would say it is a game.
1 - I think that the definition of sport as a competitive physical activity precludes poker. Sure, you need to move your arms, but hey sleeping requires breathing and moving your lungs. It's not physical activity the way such is meant.
2 - Everything I can think of in the English lexicon... "games of chance", "games of skill", "game of poker", the word that always fits best is game.
This is not to take away from poker, I think it's a great game and I don't think it would be improved if the players played while skipping rope, but I don't think we can really fairly call it a sport.
Personally, I see the link between chess and poker, and the logic that if chess is a sport then so is poker, but I think the link to chess as a sport is not really rock solid either so it's not enough to convince me.

Yes I think your right; girls don’t get the respect AT FIRST. We have to prove ourselves first then we gain the respect. Online I never let it known that I am female, only if it is at the end of a game and I’m doing really well, I will drop it in. Just to hurt their egos.
I was playing in a live game lately with guys that I Knew but had never played poker with before. They did not give me any respect as a poker player, reraising my raises with nothing, trying to scare me off. Didn’t work!! But by the end of the night I certainly had gained their respect and dented their ego's. So just play game, and if you deserve it, you will gain respect.

I believe that poker is a game of skill only...
Most people who say that poker is a game of luck and that they were unlucky to be involved in a bad beat are missing one point. We all know that AA is not a favourite to win against any other hand 100%. And that 72o will win, and has to win against AA at least some of the time. Therefore bad beats are part of the game.... they are not unlucky they are just statistical probabilities.
If AA was to hold up every single time then that in itself would be lucky and make it a game of luck. Good players can loose in poker in the short term and not because of an unlucky session but because of the fact that the best hand statistically MUST loose some of the time. Its not luck its part of the game.
That is where the skill comes into it, in learning the numbers and nuances of the game etc. And the bad news is that even if you have read all the books, played an infinite number of hands and are now the best player in the world, you MUST loose... | | Read Entire Entry |

I think the reason why online hassels with poker stick in one's craw is that poker has always been a game where certain, widely accepted, etiquette has been followed. For these kids/newbs spewing off at the mouth, it's a bit of an affront to the game itself.
That being said, I never let it bother me. Rather I find it amusing. And like Mooronic said, if they're that busy typing insults, they are obviously not concentrating on their game (and also on tilt), so that a cool head (me) can take advantage of them.
Nice article Mike.
