Hi everyone.
I'm fairly new to the game of Poker, especially playing it online. Until recently (a couple months ago) I just played with a few mates for small sums of cash over a drink and for a few laughs. I'm not really all that good just yet - still learning the game and losing mostly! I want to try to get better at Poker (holdem) and think that maybe playing online might help. I've been looking around loads of online poker sites and came across 2 that seem pretty cooool.
Can i ask if anyone has tried either Play Poker Online at AxxoPoker.com: The Internets' flagship Poker Site, or The Rivercard Online Poker Room? They seem to have some pretty jiggy online poker rooms, but i really want to know what the experts think b4 i start to spend my hard-earned dosh!
Can anyone advise me on Play Poker Online at AxxoPoker.com: The Internets' flagship Poker Site, or The Rivercard Online Poker Room?
thanks y'all.

As for you point that online isn't poker compared to live poker I think this is a true statement but not one that necessarily means that online poker is somehow rigged. Live and online are the same game with the same rules played differently. In online you get alot of really bad play that you don;t see as often in live games. Bad play and bad players equal to more bad beats and suck outs. Plus live is more of a people game then online is. Of course the older the person is you talk to the more they are going to believe that live is "real" poker and online isn't (I say this as a 49 year old by the way), since they "grew up" with live poker before there was such a thing as online poker. Remember us old times have a general lack of understanding and a misstrust of computers and the internet.
So talking to one older guy at a poker table isn't evidence that online poker is rigged.

Perhaps a better focus would be on poker strategy in general (?). There are no magic bullets. Most books that purport to focus on "online/internet" tend to be on the basic side, geared to those who have never played online. The "tips" that you pick up regarding playing on the internet are going to be less aluable to you in the end than grasping some deeper concepts that you can use in all games, live or otherwise.
That being said here are some:

Killer Poker Online by John Vorhaus

Dan is half right. Collusion is a snap in the online arena, so online poker is rigged - just not by the house.
By that standard, though, all poker is riged. Collusion is just as easy in home games. Then you can throw in base dealing, deck stacking, marked cards etc... and it becomes much more dangerous than online poker. I wouldnt realy say it's rigged, although you can be cheated. Actualy, this brings to mind an article i read about a month ago about online poker being rigged. You should check it out. http://www.billrini.com/index.php/2...poker-is-rigged

So, I am doing a research project involving online poker, namely its a software project involving collusion detection.
For it, I have to establish some background and discuss the social and ethical implications.
So I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on, why you think poker is ethical/ unethical? why do you play poker? What if any skills do you aquire from playing poker (particularly online poker). Do these skill help you outside of poker? should online poker be legal and regulated? What impact do you think poker has on society, the economy, etc.?
Please respond with your thoughts, it will help me alot. Also would be helpful if you could direct me to links pertaining to the the ethics of poker, and the debate over the legal regulation of online poker.
Also if you have any experience with collusion detection algorithms and are willing to help, let me know...
thanks!

I would agree live poker is much easier then online. I think the main problem with online poker is that its harder to stay focused with all the distractions at home. In addition online poker tends to bring out your faults in the game more.

Seriously though, if you plan to play online, try to control yourself. Unlike live games, online poker is much more accessible, and you tend to play a lot, even at times when you should be doing something more important. Slap yourself if you go outside your bankroll to fund online poker play.

I have a few theories
1: poker is losing popularity
2: with the European poker tour and Asian poker tour gaining ground, non-US players are finding it unnecessary to travel all the way too the US for a major poker tournys
3: less online satellite entrees because of the online poker ban in the US

I cannot recall one person yet that has been taken to court over playing poker online, personally I think they are scaring people cause they do not want this to go to the higher courts, I think the courts would rule in our favor. It would be nice though if they did arrest someone and they put up a good fight, cause this whole online gambling thing is ery hypocritical, you can gamble on horses and lotto and keno and god knows how many other state run games you can play, yet no online poker.
