Both good. Gambling Online magazine primarily focuses on online entities. Gambling Times is an old, well-known magazine which covers all aspects of gambling, including poker, as well as online (my last two articles are here).

One day you'll see me in Gambling Online magazine as well LOL - just a matter of finding enough time and quality subjects to write about!

There's a difference between saying online gambling is illegal and online gambling is not considered to be legal.

You don't see cigarette ads all over the place. Does that mean smoking is illegal?

Let me put it another way. If online gambling is illegal, why is Congress trying (and failing) to pass laws to make online gambling illegal?

Actually, Trisha, that's true but not necessarily with regards to online gambling.

Gambling is banned in most countries, with the exception of what usually turns out to be government lotteries and racing.

Online gambling, however, is only officially banned in mainland China and South Korea. No other country has specific laws relating to this issue - not even Singapore.

Topic: Some news from Boss. Forum: Winner Online

I would be a bit leary investing in online casino stocks right now since there is a decent chance the US will outlaw online gambling. The US represents the majority of online gaming revenue so this would have a drastic effect on the industry.

There is a shift towards more european and asian revenue, but the US still is and would continue to be the largest online gaming market.

But it does seem like Boss is particularly well situated to handle this situation if/when it does arrive. They already offer at least one non-us casino which is presumably successful (atlantis).

How likely do you all think it is that the US will ban online gambling in the next 1-3 years?

And if they do ban it, would people in the US significantly cut back on their online gambling?

Woody, I doubt he would be prosecuted. I don't believe anyone has ever been prosecuted in the US for gambling online, I could be wrong though. I know people who have claimed winnings on their taxes from online gambling without any probelms. I think a few may have been from states that outlaw online gambling too.

The US DOJ has "opined" that online gambling is illegal. That is not the same as saying that online gambling is illegal by law, because it isn't. There are no US federal laws which relate to online gambling except the Wire Act, and online casino gambling has already been said to not be covered by the Wire Act, based on a number of decisions already handed down.

Let's not get off track here.

The gambling age in Nevada is generally regarded to be 21.

The age of majority in Nevada is 18. Or 19 if you are still in high school.

By this reckoning, and the terms and conditions of the casino itself, the player's wagers are entirely alid and the casino has no right to rescind winnings based on their argument that the player was underage.

Paypal has gotten back into the online gambling business for European players. This is even more interesting as Ebay, their parent company, has come out in support of a US ban in online gambling. Maybe they felt obligated to do so after all the trouble Paypal got into with the state of New York (I believe it was them). They paid a massive fine that was around the amount of money they ever made from online gambling transactions.

Mary,

I don't know what the recent Microsoft announcement regarding online gambling was about.

No, I haven't heard anything at the conference.

Microsft is already involved in the land base gambling biz so I wouldn't doubt that they will enter the online gambling market somehow.

I know that their games division has been building suite of casino games.

This industry is changing so fast. Hopefully, the online experience will also be much more fun, secure and easier!

Your information is incorrect. The Federal Government has not been given any power to declare online gambling illegal.

A number of states have directly banned online gambling, including California and Nevada.

And credit card companies are under no such obligation to block credit card deposits at online casinos.

Where, might I ask, did you get your misleading information from?

Oh yeah if online gambling was illegal in the states, she could not sell online casino's for 5 million dollars out of Missouri.
If they do not want the government to regulate online gambling, maybe they should do a little better job of protecting the industry from crooks. Oh that would mean disbaning the IGC.

Once eBay purchased PayPal, they cut out all online gambling revenue, which was something like 20% of their total revenue. A tough hit, but eBay didn't want to deal with any letters from the government showing up. While players would certainly trust PayPal or Visa or Mastercard more than Neteller, the fact is the U.S. goverment is putting pressure on those companies to not accept online gambling revenue in an attempt to curb online gambling from U.S. citizens.

So, to answer the original question, there are no sites that accept PayPal as a payment source because PayPal won't deal with online gambling.

South Africa Takes Steps To Online Gambling Regulation

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007
<DIV class=entry>The National Gambling Amendment bill was passed yesterday by South Africa’s parliament. This Bill, sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry will aim to regulate the online gambling industry in South Africa, including online poker.
The department has said that it does not want to follow the US in banning online gambling for fear of it driving it underground and out of its regulatory reach. The bill specifies that online gaming companies will have to locate their servers and records within the boundaries of South Africa as well as obtaining a national license. Gambling operators will have the responsibility of erifying their players age and identity and assist in the players in using a bank to handle all transactions.

According to the DTI, this Bill will protect players by providing regulation, making sure online gambling revenues pay their share of tax revenues...

A HUGE fact overlooked in regards to potential tax revenue from online gambling is that a large majority of online players LOSE money to the casinos. Any gambling tax paid to IRS would be offset by gambling losses claimed as deductions. I highly doubt that $1.2 BILLION dollars is being passed up in tax revenue but that is just a figure pulled from air to justify regulation. But it gets sticky to regulate online casinos if they are based in non-US countries.

Like I said, I'm straddling... LOL...

Autumn - the fact of the matter is that if you reside in Nevada, this jurisdiction prohibits online gambling. Other jurisdictions in the US (like South Dakota, for example) also prohibit online gambling - but many states do not have any laws one way or the other regarding online gambling (except Utah and perhaps one or two other states, which prohibits all forms of gambling).

Because your jurisdiction prohibits online gambling, your age is irrelevant. You can be 2, 20, or 200 and it would make no difference.

There are other points which I am considering at the moment, and obviously the casino itself is clearly at fault AS WELL. Not either/or - both sides have arguments in their favor, both sides have arguments against them, and I'm personally trying to weigh all of these to see where I stand, even if technically it makes no difference.

Everyone, please do not imply that I am on one side or the other - and please make no pr...

Gambling losses are only deductable as itemized deductions up to the amount of gambling winnings, unless you are a professional gambler. This means that gambling cannot reduce your taxes, if fact, you can lose money and still end up owing more taxes.

There's "online gambling" and then there's "online poker". They are two COMPLETELY different things.

If you are addicted to online gambling (I'm assuming irtual casinos) then, yes, you have a problem because you will lose in the long-term no matter what system you use.

If you are addicted to online poker then it depends. If you play to the well-known tried and tested formulas and use patience and discipline then you do not have a problem because you will win long-term.

If you are addicted to online poker and treat it as if it's gambling and have no logical way of playing then, yes, you have a problem.

Does online gambling cause mental stress or mental problems? Again, if you are referring to irtual casinos then I'm sure that for many people this would be an unfortunate "yes".

Racing industry generous to anti-online gambling politician

One of online gambling's most passionate detractors apparently enjoys almost $40 000 in encouragement and support from an industry that benefits increasingly from his attacks on Internet gambling.

According to an article on Gambling Web this week, quoting from the Internet webcast "Perspectives," the wannabe nemesis of online gambling, Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, has accepted almost $40 000 in campaign funds from the horse racing industry.

Goodlatte has consistently been an ardent supporter of anti-online gambling legislation that gives inequitable carve-outs for Internet betting through state lotteries, fantasy sports and, yes - horse racing in the United States. And the latter has in particular embraced the opportunity with expanded online betting activities (see recent InfoPowa reports)

OK, now my two cents.

When I first started gambling online, I thought it should not be regulated.

But after getting sucked in some rip off casinos I have changed my mind. I think if someone wants to gamble online, nobody should stop them.

I strongly feel that it has to be regulated by some REAL AUTHORITY, not a bunch of crooks on some island somewhere.

Self regulation has never worked on anything. We can have all the player union's and such. But someone has to keep the crooks out of the industry.

If GP pulled the crap they pulled anywhere where gambling is legal. They would of been locked down and locked up.

I do not think online gambling should be banned. It has to be regulated.
