I assume from your posts that you are used to play low limit cash games. While it helps to be good at NL cash games early in the tournament, you have to do adjustments when the blinds get bigger, and especially bubble strategy is something you wont be used to (and which again is completely different in MTTs and SNGs).
So for a good start i would recommend buying the three volumes of Harrington on Holdem and study them thouroughly (if you havent already done this). This will get you a firm grasp of the needed tournament strategy.
Then i wouldnt recommend playing any big tournaments with 1000+ participiciants.
These are good for taking a shot, but most of the time you will either finish out of the money
or have a tiny payout. You really have to make the final table once in a while to make them worthwile, but this will be very hard.
Smaller fields are better, but these tourney still take a long time and while your ROI may be quite decent, it is not so easy to get a good hourly rate at lower levels.
I currently play a lot of qualifiers at Stars. These reward survival (which is good since i often last quite long, but normally dont have a huge stack), are quite quick (especially the turbo-rebuys which take about 1,5 hours) and the average opponent has normally no clue regarding the bubble (which has obviously a huge impact on these since all prizes are the same). A very nice feature at Stars is that you can unregister from the tourney you qualified for and get T$ or W$ instead, which you can sell at 2+2 (or play more qualifiers with).
SNGs are also a good choice, here your ROI will be lower, but they take even less time and you can probably play more at the same time. If you want to get good at bubble decisions in SNGs you should get SNGTP which costs $75 and helps you a lot in push/fold or call/fold decisions considering ICM and calling/pushing ranges of your opponents.
I would recommend to try each of your options at meaningless stakes, then look what is best for your style of play, what makes most fun for you (also very important since your motivation will be higher), and where you have the best results (although these will obviously only very shortterm), and then decide what you want to do.
Then start at low stakes and move slowly up in stakes/add more tables when you succeed at the lower levels, but always have something like 50 buyins in your bankroll (and move down when you dont have). Post some hands, where you had problems finding the best decisions.
While it may take quite a while to get to $6k you will also learn a lot.
Oh and dont forget that you can clear bonuses while playing tournaments as well (although its a lot slower, but at bodog for example you get 100% of your tourney fees refunded, which isnt bad).
Good luck! |
