A few things.
#1. Buy this book:

It covers all the basics and will give you a very good working knowledge on sports betting.
#1A. If you don't want to buy the book, then you MUST read this:

#2. Open at least 3 online sportsbook accounts. Pinnacle is a MUST as one of them. Choose a book that cheats their lines towards the squares. Among other books to choose that are solid : CRIS, Bet 365, Bowmans, Olympic, SIA, WSEX and Wagerstreet. It is critical that you have more than one book so you can 'shop' the lines to get the best 'price' for your bet. A 1/2 pt doesn't sound like much, but when you hit your bet because of it, you'll soon learn to shop!
#3. Do NOT pick a sportsbook simply based on a bonus. There have been a LARGE number of books that have went bellyup in the past 12 months. There will be many, many more that are out of biz before the end of the football season.
#4. Typically, you should play dogs. There is rarely value in betting the favorites. John Q Dumbass bets the faves, which artificially drives up the price.
#5. Get on a forum with some knowledgable players. I visit http://www.mwforums.com/fusetalk/index.cfm on a daily basis.
#6. Get a buddy to refer you. Many books offer referral bonuses. (If you need someone to refer you, I'll gladly split my referral cut with you 50/50).
