Do you honestly think that you can quit your job and play this full time? Like my post above said, I have a wife for 7 years, a five year old and another one on the way. I am a 32 year old accountant that works with financial planning. I really want you to consider the following things before you think you are invinceable:
1. Income - This need varies so much. Me in Western Wisconsin can do ok with a $50k a year. If I were in a bigger city $100k would be comparable. Are you making that a year playing cards? Don't think so, and if you are go to the next point...
2. So your making $50k+ a yearplaying cards online. How much are you paying for your benifits (health insurance 401k) you had with your job. Benifits ar usually comperable to 50% of your salary, so now you better be making 75k+ per year. Don't think so, but if so go on.....
3. Are you paying taxes on it? You answered yes... How about paying into Social Sercuity, didn't think so. If you have kids or a wife, there goes their death benifit for them if you die not to mention retirement if your still around.
4. What is going to happen when you need to go back and get your job again. What are you going to put on the your resume for the past 5 years you haven't had a job? I'm sure Bonus whoring will get you far in a Conservative job market.....
This is just a start of why you should not quit your job. Please enjoy your supplemental income, but please don't quit your 8-5 job. Enjoy being a whore.... There should never be a time where you get sick of playing Holdem of any other game. Work on your game to study, re-read those books and get better.
Again, please enjoy being a whore, but use this tool wisely. I don't mean to affend anyone, but please consider this. Another option is use these skills to get a job or write a book.
I feel the need to form a small rebuttal here.
I quit my job 1.5 years ago to play poker. I have a wife and two kids. It is a decision I have never regretted. Last October, my wife quit her job, and we became a one income household. Right now I am making (just from poker, not including BW or PPP.com) double what I could working as an entry level accountant.
I work when I want.
I wear whatever I want to work.
I don't have a boss or office politics.
I can do other things while working, like work on this website or play w/my kids or watch TV.
Maybe I'm ultimately giving up some upside in not pursuing accounting. But I have no desire to work my whole life making someone else money so I can retire and play poker. Why not just play poker now?
I think that for anyone with the ability to play flawless ABC LHE, $120k/year is not out of the picture for a Party 15/30 player. This is where I am now. It could be where I top out at, or maybe I'm good enough for the 30/60. Time will tell, but even if my top level is 15/30, I can be quite happy with the lifestyle it provides.
If you want to quit your job and play cards, by all means read Truerednec's post, and consider what he says. The lifestyle is not for everyone, and for as soft as the games are now, there's still only a small percentage of the population that have the skills to make 6 figures annually playing poker. If you have the skills, and the lifestyle fits you, it is very rewarding.
Jek, how old are you?
This is a really great post. I'm 24, bailed out of school at 20, and am going back within a year or two. The irony is that it took me making a decent chunk at poker (live and online) to really WANT to go back to school. I don't know... I think everyone here is damn intelligent, so this isn't holier-than-thou... I kind of would like to eventually do something more fulfilling. But it's hard to argue with making $40/hr (I play 20/40 live and multitable online); when my first jobs out of school were $12-20/hr (temping).
I'll tell you one thing... it's nice tipping 20-25% without a second thought and buying the round for my friends. BTW, I'm a tight ass with myself, but generous with friends, so don't sweat my 'money management.'
I definitely go through stages of 'obsession' with things. Poker's lasted longer than some things did; maybe it's cuz it makes me significant money. My perspective is that I can keep playing poker and reffing ice hockey while I go back to school, so why the fuck not?
