Many places only rake $2/4 when the pot reaches $20, but they rake it for a full 1$; they rake $1/2 at either $5 for $.25 or $10 for $.50. So playing 500 raked hands at $2/4 would mean being dealt into hand that paid $500 rake as a minimum, while 500 raked hands at $1/2 would be either a minimum of $125 or $250 in rake.
Other sites rake proportionately more rake at lower limits, like Pokerroom where a $10 pot at $1/2 gets raked an astronomical $1. Yes, this makes the bonus clear faster, but since the bonus is not 100% rakeback, it still costs you money.
I only play at places where I can turn at least a mild profit before bonus and rakeback, but I will often play at tighter games in which the bonus more than makes up for the lower win rate. At Absolute, my win rate is less than half that at Party, but bonus and rakeback makes it worthwhile.
