Topic: Is it just me, or has bonuswhoring become very lame? Forum: Bonus Whores

I used to hate playing more than 2 tables at a time and I spent a lot more time focusing on the game. It wasn't until later, that I discovered how much could be made from bonuses at low levels that I started seriously multi-tabling (4 or more). And that's about the time that my improvement greatly slowed down. Why get better when you can win at 1/2 and clear bonus at the same time with almost no effort.

I recall, a year and a half ago, posting on here that I didn't like Party's $200 bonuses because they required me to grind out too much play, and I had to play more than 2 tables to get in the raked hands in 7-10 days.

Now, I'd be very excited about that...but my game hasn't really progressed.

I actually look forward to working on that more. I've been on autopilot too long because of the bonuses.

When I first started, back at the 0.10/0.25 tables, I was truly playing because I simply liked poker. Money was 100% not a factor. It was only a measure of winning vs. losing; no more, no less (obviously at those levels, right?)

I still enjoy poker, but somewhere along the way it has become too much about the money (don't get me wrong, that's nice, and if you care about improving your game, you'll have to keep trying to move up, which in turn will lead to more money, but that's not why I got into this.)

Poker used to be more fun. Bonuses took part of that away. Mind you, they gave me money in return, so I'm not complaining, but in the long run, I would have been better off getting better at poker and moving up to, say 3/6, 5/10, where I could make just as much money w/o the bonuses as I do at 1/2.

It was the same for me: i started for fun and, after a few months, it was all about bonuses.
I was tired and I hated poker. It was like having another job: i returned home, had dinner and started playing poker until midnight. Crazy.
I stopped completely for a few months, I bought some books during my holidays in USA, I studied them and started again. Now I play only one table. Bonus it's only something to reduce variance.
I like poker, it's not a job. I respect full time bonus whorers and I think they are great, because it's not easy to spend all day in front of a monitor multitabling 5-10 for hours. I can't understand how they can do it and still love poker.
For me it's different: I accepted it. I focus on my game, try to understand my mistakes, play only when I'm not tired, try to reach new levels, enjoy my family.
Poker is the best hobby I could find, nothing more, nothing less.
