The whole saga has been ery interesting to watch as it unfolds.
In the bigger picture, the license itself isn't even the real issue - at least not in terms of the actual Betfair operations. They already take wagers from Australia in the exact same form as they will if licensed.
Taxation isn't the real issue for Betfair. The upfront taxes are an issue for the revenues of Tasmania, especially since they are trying to tack on a $5M track fee, because it gives them a way of pulling revenues from the UK into Tasmania. But that is an issue for the government - not for Betfair. The actual taxes for Betfair could be worked so that they are only taxed on Tasmanian wagers - and who can say what that would add up to be - perhaps next to nothing.
The real issue for BetFair is, and always has been, advertising. They take a fair amount of business from AU as it is, but it could become the center of their core activity if they were allowed to legally advertise. In order to meet the requirements for said advertising, they must hold a license in at least one AU state. So if they get licensed in Tasmania, they can advertise across all of the AU, which would be a phenominal amount of business for them.
So, yes, it's partially about getting licensed, and credibility is a positive side-effect of that - but the core issue of this debate is the ability to advertise in Australia - not so much in having firm operations there. In that respect, I can understand why they have such outspoken opponents.
