A convention of 28 US states has petitioned the US government for the right to retain control of online gambling legislation in the wake of the recent WTO ruling.
A recent ruling by the WTO found the US was in contravention of trade rules by restricting access to Antiguan egaming sites.
But if offered the US a lifeline by allowing them to continue its opposition if it repealed all its existing egaming legislation.
And this has caused concern at the state level with fears the US federal governement will look to overrule existing legislation.
Attorney Generals from 28 states have united to ask the US trade representative dealing with the Antigua case to fight for the rights of states to set their own laws.
“Antigua has no business trying to write Utah's gambling laws,'” Mark Shurtleff, Utah’s Attorney General, said.
The states involved include Nevada, which has existing egaming legislation, as well as Oregon and South Dakota, which have made moves towards some form of regulated online gambling.
