Spending on gambling is growing faster than what consumers are forking out in the nation's malls and supermarkets, new figures released on Tuesday showed.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said retail growth in the past 12 months had been at its slowest since the recession of the early 1990s but it was a different story for the gambling sector.

The bureau said between December 2003 and the December 2005 quarter, total retail turnover had increased 7.7 per cent to $51.8 billion.

But over that same period, gambling net proceeds grew 22.1 per cent to almost $2 billion. Total turnover through hotels and licensed clubs was up 12.1 per cent to more than $4.8 billion.

Gambling now accounted for 40 per cent of total turnover in the nation's pubs and licensed clubs.

Gambling proceeds grew 4.5 per cent in the December quarter alone, and followed growth rates of more than 5 per cent in two of the previous three quarters.

NSW is still the nation's gambling epicentre. Seven per cent of total retail turnover in the state was attributable to gambling.

Gambling accounts for 3.2 per cent of retail turnover in Queensland, 3.1 per cent in the ACT, 2.9 per cent in South Australia, 1.8 per cent in Victoria, 1.4 per cent in the Northern Territory and less than 1 per cent in Tasmania and Western Australia.
