The casino owners in the neighbouring independent country of Swaziland actually tried to take the provincial and national government and Gambling Board of SA to court to offer online gambling to South Africans.

This is not as cheeky as it may sound, bearing in mind that the national government is currently considering the regulation of online gambling following an extensive commission of enquiry into the industry. And it is likely that the commission's recommendation that online gambling be regulated will be accepted.

However, that has not yet come about, and the traditional gambling laws of the country still apply, effectively making internet gambling illegal as it has no license.

And not unlike the US, South Africa has its fair share of provincial enforcement zealots who are probably faced with a shrinking timeframe for prosecutions.

Most observers are hoping the national government will move quickly on this (regulatory acceptance) as this sort of issue just adds to the general confusion.

In the meantime, the plaintiff here has been given leave to appeal by the court, so I would guess this tale is not told yet.
